It's not even as if it's in their favour to let him walk on a free because he's clearly worth good money.
A new contract would have been futile anyway, there's no chance he'd have signed it.
I bet 18 months ago he'd have signed one. Even if you put some release clause in it so the club were guaranteed some recompense if an offer came in.
