They have played in England or Scotland for many years. It's to do with understanding of the British game not their nationality.

That wasn't what he said. He said "I wouldn't say he has a record for signing foreign players more than any other manager."

That is different to saying Bruce doesn't have a record for signing players from foreign clubs more than any other manager.

SOUTHEND United chairman Ron Martin has confirmed the club have rejected an offer from Hull City for the Shrimpers highly-rated shot-stopper Daniel Bentley.

Tigers boss Steve Bruce was at Roots Hall to watch Bentley in action against West Ham United at Roots Hall on Saturday.

But Martin has turned down his offer for the 22-year-old, which Echosport understands was around the £1 million mark.

“Steve Bruce spoke to Phil Brown and Steve Kavanagh but we’ve said no to the offer,” said Martin.

The Shrimpers chief also confirmed that no other clubs have made an offer for Bentley and that the League One newcomers remain in contract talks with the goalkeeper.

Bentley, who came through the youth ranks at Roots Hall, has made 112 appearances for Blues and has 12 months left on his current contract at the club

Weird, I thought they were holding out for £1m? They obviously want to keep him, but I think this might piss him off if he wants to move.

Can't believe we haven't signed anyone yet ffs. I wonder if we will be able to field 11 players in our first game.

Why can't you believe it? We've been relegated, we have to shift all the high earners before we can bring in any new faces. We haven't shifted enough players yet, so we haven't brought in any replacements. The players that have left, while useful, were cheap and therefore didn't free up enough budget.

So the better question is, why haven't we shifted more players already?

I thought he wasn't in a position to make any bids/offers etc until Thursday and he'd met with the Allams. Something is a bit fishy.
