Captains?

Who should be captain this season...

  • VVD

  • Milner

  • Hendo

  • Firmino

  • Lovren

  • TAA

  • Salah

  • Mane

  • Robbo

  • Don't care who wears the armband, just lad on the pitch regardless

I'm not sure it matters a great deal. I do think though that it could weigh heavy on some individuals like Salah for instance. VVD on the other hand is ice cool and I can see him getting it eventually, when, is another question.
 
I wouldn't take it from Hendo necessarily, I just don't think he makes the 1st team currently. All fit and the midfield in Fabinho, Keita and Chamberlain.

I get the impression that Klopp is unconcerned about the on field Captain and that in Germany the armband is given to the player on the pitch that has played the most games. What does he actually do apart from watch the ref toss a coin and chose ends?
 
Wouldn’t remove it from Hendo. He’s just captained ya to the CL final and would be a real kick in the teeth for him and undermine him.

Milner is VC atm so he may step aside given he will only be here another year or two and hand it over to VVD in prep.

I think you're right. I envisage Henderson getting less time as the midfield strengthens - and Milner for that matter. I don't think Klopp will officially take it from them, it will just be given to VVD [most likely] and passed to either of the other 2 should they come on.

I think we need to be harsh and do what's best for the team and giving it to an actual leader is the right step.
 
What matters is having leaders who can speak up, whether they have a title or not. Hendo obviously has Klopp's confidence. When VVD signed, Matt le Tissier said, "He has captaincy potential, but there's also part of him which just switches off when it is a bit too easy, which if he's going to be a captain he has to eradicate from his game."

Is Hendo not captaining the team to the final any good then?

Think too much is made about actually having the armband anyway. It’s about having leaders on the pitch who take responsibility.

I actually think vvd might be a bit too laid back. Hendo looks like he does actually get stuck in and he’s obviously really well respected within the current group.

Did he captain the team or was he team captain?
 
Look Rafa took the armband off hyypia unfairly and handed to gerrard.

My view is:

a) the senior players should all be standing up and leading. its a group thing.

b) the captain should be the extension of the coaches into the squad. he should in theory be giving feedback to coaches on feelings in dressing room etc. A players representative. If our club doens't need one and they can all talk openly so much the better

c) the captain is an external representation of the club to the world. he is the one who will be speaking in public or on tour etc. its a media thing


so: on the pitch... theres no role of captain bar hand over a pennant and see the ref toss a coin. Off the pitch it depends on the group of players and manager, the days of senior men meeting in a room and deciding what to do as players should be long gone but it still happens to get a manager the sack. The captain job is to bring along the guys who are not buying in. peer pressure etc.


I wouldn't think henderson is all that as a captain but who knows. I wouldn't have rated gerrard as one par se.
 
The captain on the pitch is also the only player supposed to be able to talk to the ref after an incident - you want someone who is persuasive and gutsy. Look how many times we've seen a ref be persuaded by a John Terry type.

Point of order: it was Houllier who took the captaincy off Hyypia in 2003, which he did because he believed the role was affecting his game following a loss of form.

Gerrard would appear to fulfill all the criteria you list.

We may see who was the more natural leader with Gerrard's managerial career. Sami's has not been the success we would've hoped for him.

was it? You are probably right!


My view of gerrard was he was

a) local
b) inspirational
c) the older he was the more he grew into the role.

but

d) he could drop the head at times just on occasion you could tell

I think in general however captain and manager doesn't add up.

Look at tony adams.... well.... maybe not <laugh> it was talked about as a great captain by his mates, but he was a boozer, he's not been a good manager.

I think there's several examples of leaders and cpatins that have been both good and bad managers. I think its two different mindsets and ethics personally.

I think the brown envelope stuck i nthe back pocket has more influence than a gobby capatin. Also carragher always did this role for us while gerrard was on the pitch. FIrst over i ntheir face.

It just shows how leadership is not an armband. The captain and vice captain deal is more about bestowing some level of official backing to the senior guys to boss the dressing room and hunt out the guys not working hard enough.

Nah don’t buy this. Like people that say we only came 2nd because Suarez was amazing, but it’s rodgers fault we didn’t win the league. You can’t blame someone for the bad if you’re not going to praise them for the good.

Its a team game, everyone has an impact good or bad. You can’t say that he was just captain of the team but had no impact.

yeah thats dead right.

its everyone in together. henderson has a role as captain there. the question is would someone else do better?

I don't think he had much of an impact at all, neat and tidy and a good pro. He's done a good job but that doesn't mean we shouldn't look toward the squad an if there is someone who is capable of being an inspirational captain.
