You picked the worst example to take a dig at considering the percentage of kids in school aged 6-12 in Cuba went from 56% under Batista to 100% by the 1980s.

Could they succeed in the cut throat, go getting world of the public sector though where people who found the private sector too much bailed out to?

Plenty of very clever people only ever work for others, and some thickos start and grow very successful businesses.
