Bruces Problem

Hi guys I think I have an idea what is happening to the club this is just an idea please if you don't think it is correct let me know.

I feel that Bruce is not the manager for the club because of one reason and one reason only he is not up to managing at this club he was meant for a club like wigan.

I feel looking at his tactics and the players he is buying he is suited for a relegation fodder team and if you look at every manager you can see what level they are meant to be manager for example Jose needs money to operate and he works best and the top teams and you would never see him at wolves for example...

Bruce is struggling with the level of ambition of the club and is trying to aught it out on quantity not quality (like a relegation team does because the best players get bought... eg i think you know who) his tactics in big games is to push for it but when you go behind its damage limitations and in cup games where small teams cant afford to go on these runs he players a weakened team.

The players you buy are older players from big teams or players unproven in the premier league just like a team in the lower part of the league would do.


I feel all the signs are there but the question is what are sunderland going to do about it and would could they bring in because again levels to lower level and the team does not work (Bruce now or Hodgson at pool) or to high the manager needs money which they cant have and the team again fails you need to get it right.

I don't agree with this, although I can see what you mean.

Alex Ferguson found the same trouble at first, but then he got to grips with the problems and the rest, as they say, is history. people make the SAF comparison, but before he want to United he won the SPL with Aberdeen, Bruce has been to several clubs before us and the truth is he hasn't accomplished anything that's really noteworthy

Yes, and European Cup Winners Cup - a hell of an achievement with a club the size of Aberdeen.

Interesting post Wigan. The fact is that he has constantly been involved with clubs that were fighting against relegation. That is his mark and that's what he has done.

His record for "winning" anything is poor. He took Birmingham up via the play offs but achieved nothing at Sheff Utd, Huddersfield, or Crystal Palace. He took Wigan to an 11th place finish but for a manager with some sort of reputation it is very difficult to see what this reputation is based on.

He is doing the same for us as he has done at all of these other clubs; nowt.

I think you have a very good point actually. However, Bruce has been debated to death though at the moment up here and with Quinny and Short seemingly now giving him the thumbs up, its also a pointless one now as well.

That said, in another 10 games we may well be debating it again where your theory will again be a talking point Wigan.

It's not like Bruce has been managing teams like Burton and Havant & Waterlooville all his career and then went to manage at Chelsea.

I agree Bruce is out of his depth at Sunderland because of expectations, but he isn't exactly taking a massive step up from Wigan is he? I think apart from the crowd size, and stadium size and ancient history - there really isn't much difference. Bear in mind Wigan is very much a rugby town. He's not failing by any stretch at Sunderland, he is simply delivering the Bruce way. Last season was only (by the skin of his teeth) the 2nd time he has delivered a top 10 finish to a season in the Premier League.

Don't kid yourselves into thinking he can put together wonder-squads capable of mounting trophy challenges or European football challenges. The guy was brought in to do a better job than Keane, to steady the ship and he has delivered on every level. To win things you're going to need somebody with more minerals than Bruce. Mark Hughes...this guy gets top 10 finishes for fun with limited budgets, fair enough he didn't hit the ground running at City but the guy is head and shoulders above Bruce...and most importantly UNEMPLOYED.

I agree with the previous post. The difference between Sunderland and Wigan in recent times is a fair one. The big difference is that we have invested an enormous amount of money and it hasn't made any real difference.

If you are earning a 100 quid a week, you might be happy coming home to beans on toast for your tea, or a corned beef pie. If you are earning 1000 quid a week, then you might expect a nice piece of fish or a sirloin steak.

We are still on the beans diet but paying for the best the butcher has to offer. That's the difference. We have a right to raise our expectations. Bruce seems to think that we want to win the European Cup! It would be nice but most of us are squirming because we are so close to the drop zone. Bruce chooses not to see it because he's a failure and a buffoon, blaming the fans for expecting too much. He will see whether the expectations are too high over the next couple of games. Unless he gets his house in order my realistic expectation is that he will get his cards.

You are right about Hughes too. Far superior manager to Bruce.

i think the difference between wigan and sunderland is wigan are a team which goals are to stay up ( for the resons in the artical) while sunderland (again in the artical) want to be pushing higher

I think he has a good point, Bruce has a small club mentality which he is forcing on Sunderland. Against Arsenal he took all of the players likely to score off and played for the draw at 1-1 when he could have stayed competitive and pushed for a last gasp goal.

For me if Bruce were to go, Rafa would be a step up - whether we could get him to come would be another thing but I can't see why not. We have money and he would be in charge of transfers, and already a decent squad in place.

Can we do you a straight swap for Martinez? I'd have Bruce back in preference to Martinez any day. Yes we (Wigan) have lower expectations, but I'd prefer someone in charge who is realistic and plays to our strengths to keep us in the Premiership - which he did comfortably for his 2 seasons as manager and one of them from a perilous starting position - than think we're Barcelona and go down looking like fools - which is how we looked on Saturday. Sunderland may be in danger of going down, but if we carry on playing as we did on Saturday we are racing certainties.
