I’m pleased to see one of the worst aspects of Brexit being addressed in regards to illegal immigration and people smuggling. Those who voted to leave, to ‘take control of our borders’ were actually making things worse.

While we were in Europe it was illegal to smuggle people from Germany, where there are huge numbers, to the UK. Once we were out of the EU it was no longer a criminal offence.

That was a clear signal for the gangs to increase their activities. And, of course, Germany would be pleased that migrants would be shifted out of their country with no effort or expense needed on their part.

It seems Yvette Cooper has reached an agreement with Germany to make it illegal …

… that could make a much greater impact than spending hundreds of millions on idiotic schemes like Rwanda imo.

LONDON — A majority of Brits who voted to leave the European Union in 2016 would now accept the return of free movement in exchange for EU single market access, according to a new poll.

Research by the European Council on Foreign Relations think tank, published Thursday, argued that Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and Donald Trump's imminent return to the White House had “fundamentally changed the context” in which Brits see U.K.-EU relations.

YouGov/DataPraxis polled 2,125 Brits as part of its study. It found that 54 percent of those who backed Brexitin 2016would accept the full free movement of people to travel, live and work across EU borders in return for access to the bloc's single market.

Some 59 percent of "red wall voters" — those in key constituencies which have changed hands between Labour and the Tories in recent elections — said they would back that trade-off. And 81 percent of those who supported Labour in 2024 also backed the idea.

Among all U.K. voters poll, 68 percent supported the idea, with 18 percent against it. Supporters of Nigel Farage's pro-Brexit Reform UK narrowly opposed such a trade-off, by 45 percent to 44 percent.

The researchers suggested support for a rethink could be linked to the U.K.'s high levels of immigration, even after Brexit — meaning Britain's departure from the bloc is no longer seen as a way to control borders.

Labour pledged in its election manifesto that it would not rejoin the single market or customs union. However, it has embarked on a "reset" of EU relations since entering office in July.

UK GDP grew by 0.7% in Q1 this year.. France was 0.3%, Italy 0.2% and Germany 0.1%… I’m sure they’d love us back

There's as much reason to believe the poll as to not believe it. A larger scale one would be a good idea imo. Capture more views from people who stand by it, like you, and everything in between.

Edit - one of my biggest bugbears was the fuzzy nature of the whole thing. There are a hundred different ways for Brexit to be implemented so who should have decided which one the people of the UK wanted?

That’s when the Labour government came in and announced their policies. They’ve taken us back over when Sunak and Hunt had us on an upward trajectory.

The economy is outperforming the EU, that’s good. In my own opinion had there not been years of internal sabotage and trying to delay we’d be in a stronger position now. We knew they’d make it difficult but the country being so divided and refusing to move on hasn’t helped at all.

The EU is failing. Other major nations want out. People are jumping straight on farmers and claiming if it wasn’t for Brexit that they all voted for bla bla bla.. farmers across Europe have been protesting in major cities for the best part of the last 18 months. What I find bizarre about the whole thing is that the people who scream the most about it aren’t affected nor will they ever be, just like pretty much everyone else in the UK.

It’s been time to move on for years now but people can’t accept it. It’s like they’ve lost a child when in reality they’ve lost absolutely nothing other, it makes no difference whatsoever to 99% of us whether we’re in or out.

The list is endless. We are building new hospitals every week with the savings we made on membership, we have gotten rid of all that pesky red tape, and have taken back control of our borders to stop all those foreigners coming here etc etc

My life hasn’t been negatively affected in any way by leaving, nor has anyone that I know. Labour know that it’s just folk spitting their dummies out because they lost. We aren’t going back and rightly so.

It is a criminal offence the act has never been repealed it has just not been enforced

1 I am over the moon that we have got rid of those blood sucking parasites in Brussels,
Who were taking our money spending it on a lavish life stile with all their hangers on and giving us a percentage back to spend on projects they see fit and thinking we should be grateful for it.
2 My lifestyle has improved greatly by getting pension rises bigger than I’ve ever had since I retired.
Question for you
We had the biggest ship builders, car industry, coal mining industry, fishing industry and farming industry when we joined the EU now we are the smallest any idea why?
PS why are Labour not begging the EU to rejoin?
