I’m all for revamping competitions like the League Cup because it’s commonly felt amongst fans and clubs that it’s not worth the bother. It only started in the 60s too - so hardly wrecking the fabric of our history if we change it.

But I have to question your suggestion. Adding group stages, with groups of four teams and then a knock out round prior to the money making teams coming in, which will mean even more games (than now) for teams that don’t want to play ‘meaningless’ cup games in the first place.

What’s the logic?

Like I said, it’s their fault in the first place it needs a revamp. The teams can put out any team they want, just decide if they want to get to Wembley.
What’s the alternative? Just have a mass penalty shoot out until there’s 16 teams left?
Maybe that would be better for all concerned, instead of wasting everyone’s time & money to not take the competition seriously.

Whatever the cause, it's a reflection of the times: highly paid players/ sports science inputs into players playing too many games/ costs of tickets etc.

There isn’t a solution to making the League Cup more attractive in my opinion.

How much on average does a lower league club make from it? Cost of powering the stadium, player bonuses, paying the staff, policing etc All the associated costs of a matchday but with typically a lower attendance.

I would not be surprised if most clubs, especially those who exited without playing in front of any sort of decent crowd (even TV money is not that great these days) made a loss on it. Probably a select few make a bit.

If it was scrapped, the PL clubs could pay money into a pool that was divided between the bottom tiers to compensate for not having to play.

This might also make the real cup, The FA Cup, more attractive.

Yes, for a Wembley final - obviously. Even Autoglass/Associate Members Cup finals can get busy.

But not for the earlier rounds that was the point that was actually being discussed in the OP. No one has suggested at all that fans/clubs can't be arsed with that final.

Yet a large crowd at Wembley had some people saying it showed the fantastic growth in the popularity of women’s football.
Will be interesting to see the crowds for the WSL. If they publish them.

Maybe scrap it & bring back a top 2 division’s cup like the Full Members Cup, just to give teams a shot at Wembley. Even the Windscreen Cup in L1 & 2 doesn’t get taken seriously until late on.
Either way it’s a complete **** show until the last 8, maybe even last 4.

I’m with Brucebones on this one. I honestly think Shota’s ‘angry’ reaction was for show. The substitutions just did not make sense if we were trying to win.
The cup is pointless there is a 200,000 pound prize teams end up losing money due to transportation

i think there is a penalty for intentionally losing and possible match fixing allegations etc.. Might be for show. Its good we are out

6747 went to see West Brom v Sheffield Utd, if that’s in the later rounds, it’d be packed.

Tickets being 25 quid helps to cut attendances for games like this as well.
