Even thinking about the word Playoff's fills with me such relief that City are not involved... <laugh> Trying to pick a winner from Fulham, Derby, Boro & Villa is no easy task (although my bet would be Boro) and this is the challenge that faces our four plucky Div II Playoff contestants. Without further ado, a preview of the ties for the final place in next season's Div I!

    Sayer77 [PLD:7 W:6 L:1 High Score: 9pts]
    vs
    Dai Jones [PLD:0 W:0 L:0 High Score:0]

Despite several seasons in the top flight in the distant past, @Dai Jones performances since readmission have been steady if not spectacular. But finally, enough correct results have managed to steer Dai into the playoffs ahead of the illustrious Masky man (<laugh>). Unfortunately, the task that faces Dai is slightly monstrous - @Sayer77 head to head record speaks for itself before you get to the list of BPPL honors and his previous promotion via the Playoffs (back in 14)... Favorite for the 2nd tier title, Sayer narrowly missed out on a straight return to the top table and one would expect a retaliation in this tie. To buck the apple cart Dai will need CS's, something he was low on in the regular season - can he take advantage of the unpredictable nature of these ties to shock Sayer?

    Oldsparkey [PLD:4 W:1 L:3 High Score: 10pts]
    vs
    FrankfurterBlue [PLD:4 W:1 L:3 High Score: 10pts]

Both @Oldsparkey & @FrankfurterBlue share a fair amount in common prior to this tie - a shared head to head record, both losing finalists, a lot of Playoff heartbreak. A typical season for Sparks as makes it a record 4 playoff campaign, but doesn't threaten the automatics, and enters after his highest Div II finish - is that a good omen? He had never previously finished higher than 6th and never had more points - can he break his promotion duck? His opponent Frankfurter started well but faded until even a Playoff place hinged on being able to limp into the Playoffs. As proved in previous season, he can blow opponents away if he catches form but is the more consistent (if unspectacular) Sparkey a better bet? Get a tenner on it here! <laugh>

    This seasons ties -

Derby vs Fulham (Friday 11th May @ 7:45)
Middlesborough vs Aston Villa (Saturday 12th May @ 5:15)
Fulham vs Derby (Monday 14th May @ 7:45)
Aston Villa vs Middlesborough (Tuesday 15th May @ 7:45)

There have been changes to the scoring system as described in the next post. Feel free to use this as a thread to discuss the Playoffs - lets hope Derby get thumped! This seasons Capaldi Cup Final between myself and @Barry Tiger will follow.

    PM me your predictions

    Ta <ok>

    Scoring System

So those of you with some familiarity with the head to head scoring system will notice that there has been some tweaks. Long have I been unhappy with predicting the number of yellow (and red in the past) to determine ties so changes have been made to place more importance on the scoreline.

Result - Depending on how accurate your prediction is to the result of the match as shown in the table below. To qualify for points your prediction has to match with the result (Win/Draw/Lose) of the game

please log in to view this image

The term 'Accuracy' refers to how many goals you are away from the result of the match. So if I predicted 2-1 and the result was 3-1 the Accuracy would be 1 and I would get 3 points. If I predicted 5-0 and the result was 2-0 the Accuracy would be 3 and I would get 1 points. A CS still returns you 4 points (an Accuracy of 0) and now it is possible to predict the right result and get no points <yikes>

    Goal Scorers
    - Name the scorers (From both sides) to match the prediction to a maximum of three (1 point for each to a maximum of 3 points)

First Goal Scorer - Indicate the player you think will score first (1 point) Even if you predict no goals, select a player.

Tiebreaker - In the case of a draw, the tiebreaker will be used to decide the winner. It will be the total number of goals for both sides over the two ties. Closest to the actual number goes through.

    Example
Lets use this seasons game against Barnsley as an example (Hopefully you can remember how that went!)

Player 1 predicts 4-1 to Cardiff with Paterson (First Goalscorer), Zohore & McBurnie scoring
Player 2 predicts 2-0 to Cardiff with Bamba (FS) and Hoilett scoring

Player 1 would get 2 points for the result and an additional 3 points for predicting Patterson to score the first goal and the correct Barnsley scorer. Total = 5
Player 2 would get 3 points for the result and none for the scorers. Total = 3

Perhaps a bad example but hopefully that is relatively clear! Any questions please ask & feedback is welcome

Glad I'm not involved. Lost me at Scoring System.

Good luck all and may the best man win. <ok>

Nice one @Dai Jones - can’t reply to your PM for some reason but all good <ok>

    Simplified Explanation
    1) Predict result - how close to the result you are will determine how many points you get
    2) Pick scorers (to a max of 3)
    3) Select one of your scorers to score first

Yeh some very off the mark predictions. Shades of the classic @FrankfurterBlue / @Rumney Bluebird semi final a few years back. <laugh>

    Sayer77 0 - 3 Dai Jones

@Dai Jones is the only one of the 4 contenders to find any points - correctly backing Derby to make the most of Fulham's dip in form. He gets another point for Jerome's winner and that leaves @Sayer77 in a very perilous position. Two big games coming up if Sayer is to avoid only his second head to head defeat....

    Sayer
    2-1 Fulham (Vydra* Sessengnon & Mitrovic) = 0 pts
    1-1 (Asombalonga* & Adomah) = 0 pts

    Dai
    3-0 Derby (Huddlestone* Jerome & Lawrence) = 3 pts
    2-0 Boro (Assombalonga & Besic*) - 0 pts

    Oldsparkey 0 - 0 FrankfurterBlue

Less said about this one the better. Thankfully there are to more fixtures to decide a winner <ok>

    Sparks
    2-2 (Johanssen* Cairney & Lawrence) = 0pts
    1-1 (Bamford* & Grabban) = 0pts

    Frankfurter
    2-1 Fulham (Vydra* Jokanovic Johanssen) = 0pts
    2-2 (Assombalonga* Besic Terry)=0 pts

    Hostilities resume on Monday <ok>
