One fact they'll not know as they are just ****ing idiots; more of his are in competitive games than Charlton's were.

All Rooney's goals were in friendlies, he never scored in important games etc.

He was, course he was.

Rooney will break his United goal record too though, and there's loads will still refuse to accept that and will consider him to be ****.
 
The Dippers are diving into the fact that Rooney never scored when it mattered. I have chucked a small hand grenade into the debate by pointing out that the Evertonian has scored more tournament (that's tournament not qualifying) goals than any England player apart from Lineker.

The Dippers have a tortured history when it comes to English strikers.

Fowler, who they refer to as God, had a very brief and unsuccessful England career. Too fat.

Heskey. Enough said.

Owen had a good scoring record for England but he had to join United to win the league.

In short, it's a subject that drives them nuts!

... guess that depends on how you define 'competitive' <laugh> ... hasn't Wayne scored most of his goals against San Marino?

Well done to Wayne on setting a record - which he should of course go on to stretch further ... but for me (having seen both play) Sir Bobby was a class above - his goals were from midfield and many were glorious strikes ... he could also do it in key games against the very best opposition ... Gordon Banks, Bobby Charlton and Bobby Moore ... yet to be equalled, never mind surpassed (an honourable mention for Peter Shilton too - just behind Banks) ...
 
I define competitive as being during tournament or qualifier for a tournament.
Didn't Charlton get five goals against USA? Could be wrong, but they were as poor as the likes of San Marino back then. Not all Bobby Charlton's goals were in world cup finals against stellar opposition.

Not saying he's better than Charlton, he clearly isn't, just saying him breaking the record did actually happen, as you'd think it didn't the way many are trying to nit pick.
 
I heard a lad comparing Charlton and Rooney yesterday but it's impossible IMHO.
On the pitch Charlton was a midfielder who scored against all the 'big' teams regularly and at major tournaments and conducted himself impeccably. Off the pitch he was and is an utter gentlemen who is respected across the globe by fans of all teams.
Rooney get's soft goals against smaller teams, consistently abuses refs, fails at world cups and allegedly has a liking for older ladies off the pitch <whistle>
To be fair to Rooney though he's just doing a job and, in the modern game doing it fairly well so he's a good striker.. but not a true great IMHO.
