RIP Peter Vaughan (and thank you for Arry Grout) .

Grouty's job in the prison was to look after the swimming pool. Slade Prison didn't have a swimming pool. Every character, no matter how minor, was brilliantly written and perfectly acted.

The whole creation was a work of probably the 2 greatest writers in British TV comedy - Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais. The cast was immaculate and Genial Harry Grout was genius. Thanks for the memories.

That is testament to the level of stagecraft you got from many 70s ensemble casts.
No matter how minor the role, the standard matched the leads.
I, Clavdivs and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy are exactly like that too.

He only played the part in three episodes (and the spin off film). He probably wasn't on screen in the role for more than 30 minutes, but it defined him.

With Grouty he encapsulated the conservatism of Noel Cowards' Mr Bridger
with the under the surface menace of an East end firm.
And with a few mins of screen time. That is what proper acting is all about.

Anyone catch the Michael McIntyre show last Saturday? They set up this Spurs fan to 'accidentally' meet his idol Glenn Hoddle 3 times in a week!! He couldn't stop saying 'Legend' <laugh>....... and GH was a great sport!! :emoticon-0148-yes:
