Thinking about it, I was at Wembley in '71 when we beat Villa in the League Cup courtesy of 2 Chivers goals. Villa were in the 3rd Division and I don't think I'd ever heard of them prior to the game. Now, that was nearly 50 years ago. Jesus, I'm old.

Just spotted a link on Newsnow to a Villa blog reacting to the draw.
Only comment on it so far:
    We'll always have Tim Sherwood.
That’s a bond of misery that we can forever share.

    Not necessarily.

We also share the misery of having Barren Dent in our team...

Good to see that Alan Hutton was no misery to supporters of either club.

He was a misery to me. One of the most over hyped players we have ever had.

Careful Spurcat, he can dish it out.

This would have been a good pic for Spot The Ball.

Did he ? I wasn't aware his wife is a stunner.

Wasn't there a story that he got boozed up and had a fight with his father in law ?

Bobby Madley will be in charge of our game at OT on Sunday and Andre Marriner will be in charge of our home game with Hull next Wednesday.

Grouty's job in the prison was to look after the swimming pool. Slade Prison didn't have a swimming pool. Every character, no matter how minor, was brilliantly written and perfectly acted.

The whole creation was a work of probably the 2 greatest writers in British TV comedy - Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais. The cast was immaculate and Genial Harry Grout was genius. Thanks for the memories.

He only played the part in three episodes (and the spin off film). He probably wasn't on screen in the role for more than 30 minutes, but it defined him.

That is testament to the level of stagecraft you got from many 70s ensemble casts.
No matter how minor the role, the standard matched the leads.
I, Clavdivs and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy are exactly like that too.

With Grouty he encapsulated the conservatism of Noel Cowards' Mr Bridger
with the under the surface menace of an East end firm.
And with a few mins of screen time. That is what proper acting is all about.

Fletcher, of course, was a Spurs man. He goes to watch us play [and win] in the episode where he wangles a weekend at home to 'save his marriage'.
