I stood next to the Eric statue in Morcambe earlier this year. Didn't recognise it as anyone from our team though. Mind you, they probably look different when off the pitch.

Rashford looks the real deal but I feel my age group have been fortunate to witness truly exceptional teenagers who moved on QuickTime in becoming truly great players

To name a few historically talented

    Duncan Edwards
    George Best
    Jimmy Greaves
    Pele

There were others and as I have said we were a fortunate age group to witness such embryonic super skills arrive at greatness so early in their teens

Hazard as captain? Hardly a model professional is he...

Belgium always come across as somebody playing FIFA trying to cram all the players in the team - for example Witsel was playing at right back yesterday.

Why do Belgium have so many good players in virtually every position, but no fullbacks? Weird.

A very enjoyable watch until the last two goals

Mason's goal against sunderland was a fine finish to cap off a superb team move. Such a shame that with the gift of hindsight, that goal could well be the reason his Spurs career came to a premature end. Simply hasn't been the same since returning from that injury.

Radio 5 live are doing a programme tonight called 'The making of Harry Kane' at 7.30. Sounds interesting from the couple of trailers I've heard.

Muhammad Ali said to be gravely ill. A man befitting the word 'legend'. Right or wrong, he made history and changed hearts and minds. Peace be with you.

    A hero leaves us.

More than just a boxing legend, he moved hearts.

He had more useful things to say than any politician about wandering around distant corners of the earth killing darker complected peoples.

"Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go 10,000 miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on Brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights? No I’m not going 10,000 miles from home to help murder and burn another poor nation simply to continue the domination of white slave masters of the darker people the world over. This is the day when such evils must come to an end. I have been warned that to take such a stand would cost me millions of dollars. But I have said it once and I will say it again. The real enemy of my people is here. I will not disgrace my religion, my people or myself by becoming a tool to enslave those who are fighting for their own justice, freedom and equality. If I thought the war was going to bring freedom and equality to 22 million of my people they wouldn’t have to draft me, I’d join tomorrow. I have nothing to lose by standing up for my beliefs. So I’ll go to jail, so what? We’ve been in jail for 400 years."

He was also, at his best, one of the most superb and perhaps the most truly revolutionary boxer I have ever seen. Poetry in motion is a trite phrase, and may seem inappropriate for a brutal game and an ugly business, but I can’t find better words to describe Ali in his twenties.

I feel sorry for Andy Murray.

In most eras, he would have been a serial Grand Slam winner

Massive respect for Jermain Defoe for giving up some of his summer break to be part of the Soccer Aid game this evening.

    A top guy.

I didn't warm to Djokovic at the end of that game. His behaviour was unnecessary and lacked class in my opinion. You would never see Federer do that.
