It certainly became in need of some TLC Cromer for sure and sounds like it has recived some worthy investment. It is as you say a great place to stay for bird watching and the old guy Rob (handyman cum gardener) was an expert in pointing out where to go and what to see. Kelling Heath is a wonderful spot and in more recent years we have regularly taken an A-frame lodge at Weybourne in the forest and again a real treat. On that note, may I suggest Sculthorpe's Hawk and Owl Trust which is an idyllic spot for peace, quiet and som excelelnt bird life. They have the highest hide in the country and we had wonderful views of Siskin, bramblings and woodpeckers recently. They also have a breeding programme for Marsh Harriers. You wouldn't recognise the interior these days, Thurnby!. Very swish with a massive banqueting suite on the back and a new dining area added (encroaching a little on the wonderful garden). Largely geared up for weddings and large functions, I'd guess.
Just back far enough from the road to minimise traffic noise, my previous visit with a pint of Hen in the sun in the garden yielded seven (7) buzzards soaring overhead and my first orange-tip butterfly of the year
Great if walking around Kelling Heath, Muckleburgh Hill, or the coast path Weybourne -> Sheringham.
