He still had 1 year left and who knows he might have been offered a new contract if he had a brilliant season. At the end of the day Pardew was playing him and there was no other way Ashley could force him out.

Yep.
If he'd genuinely wanted to stay at Newcastle he would have stuck around for the extra year and tried to rebuild a relationship with the board.
 
Well there's three high earners off the wage bill in Enrique, Nolan and Barton. Coloccini and Smith will be away by the start of next season.

EDIT: not saying that's necessarily the right way to operate but it's painfully obvious that's what's happening.

I know what you're saying but it is highly unusual for a footballer to do what you suggest. I wish it wasn't the case but he'd be mad to have stayed and seen out his contract once they gave him the option of a free. Pure business. The main reason being is security. If he picks up a career threatening injury he's the loser. I had hoped the board would see sense but I think they've obviously wanted him out for a while because of his wages so there was little way back. No player in their right mind would take a paycut. Once he slated them on twitter for wanting rid of him, the bridges were burnt forever. And even if he hadn't they seem to have been dead set from the time they withdrew the contract offer. Such is life, stupid decision but we move on.

Joey is going to take some flack regardless of his decision whether it be to stay, leave to go to QPR or leave for any other club that comes in for him. In an ideal world he would probably want a long term contract with us. We are (despite the rumblings of some fans) moving in the right direction at least with our transfer policy, although we must splash out on a new left back and striker (but that topic has been done to death). But, if not offered a contract how can Joey stay. He could play out the season but then he is one bad injury from never getting a contract again, at least if he signs for another club (if we don't sign him up) he guarentees himself the peace of mind that he will have a career for several years!

He may love our club (if his words are to be believed) but he'd be a bloody idiot to turn down a 3/4 yr contract elsewhere on decent money when we refuse to give him any security over his future (in fact we have made it obvious that we won't offer him any long term stablity).

I, for one, hope that Ashley pulls his head out of the sand and realises that if we hold onto or best players and strengthen in areas that need strengthening then we are not far away from a solid top half team, challenging for the elusive 7th place and possible European football (I know it seems far fetched but look at the difference between the mid table clubs... it's not much)...

I hadn't considered that, as far as the Barton situation goes, to be honest!

Barton is a difficult one. He is undoubtably a good player - and in some ways I like him. But the first two games have showed how volatile he can be (even if he is very controlled at times), and his twitter account is not helping him off the pitch either. The reason he is being put on offer by the club, from my understanding, isn't that he isn't good enough for the squad, or that he wants too much money - it is that he is openly "putting pressure" (for want of a better term) on the ownership of the club. Now, to me, this is no bad thing. But I don't own the club. And to them, it is crossing a line - they have stuck with him through thick and thin (prison...), and he is not repaying them in kind. The owners have the right to do what they are doing and I can see why they are doing it - i'm not saying I agree, but i'm saying I can understand.

Now, Joey can stay for the season if he wants - and he'll play in the first team if he does. But i'm not sure if he'll have a future with us beyond that. And maybe that is what he is thinking too.
 
Relegation candidates again! Doom and gloom again! ... Heard it before? Yes every flippin week. We sold Carroll, we sold Nolan, we sold Enrique.... And yet we've had a great start to the season....

We'll move on, as we always do, and support the lads through thick and thin. So who gives a ****. Let the pundits tip us for relegation, let everyone write us off... Just makes it all the sweeter if we defy expectations.

This is a big blow for NUFC as in my opinion he is our most influential player. Not just on the pitch but also in the dressing room and training ground. He leads by example. Committed, Passionate and always up for the fight. Sometimes literally. But most importantly he had quality. Quality service into the box. Last season he was responsible for at least 14 goals via his delivery whether from open play or a set piece.

Whether you like him or loathe him, HE WILL BE MISSED.

Our Le Toon revolution of replacing all of the opinionated senior players with French do as we say fancies, is almost complete. Their is a week left before we bring in a couple more Frenchies in Cissokho and Maiga to complete the Revolution jigsaw.

Carroll, Nolan, Enrique and now Barton have all gone, with Cabaye, Marveaux, Obertan coming in with Maiga and Cissokho to follow to replace them all.

This may turn out to be suicide or a fresh new looking NUFC that actually does quite well. Either way, its a huge transition in just 6 MONTHS. Which in my opinion is a big mistake. We should have ADDED to the senior players like Barton, not REPLACED. This team will miss Barton's influence big time. This will be proved over the course of the season.

All we can do is hope and pray the powers that be (Laurel and Hardy) haven't got us into another fine mess!!

For once I agree with you, this is either going to be genius and see us push up the league or be a complete disaster and be relegation fodder.
