Speed's own father says he was coached by Bennell. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/tragic-gary-speed-stayed-*****phile-9349710

I don't understand why it would be acceptable for kids to stay at coach's houses. You wouldn't have them staying at their teacher's houses etc. Shows something completely wrong with the whole system.

Until all those stories started emerging of **** priests I don't think it was really known the extent of the danger. Also ****s (from case after case) are incredibly devious. Bennell will have passed off kids staying at his house as guidance.

Disgusting comments by Bristow saying victims were unmanly for not beating up Bennell when they'd reached adulthood.

Still one of my favourite bits of sports commentating was when a somewhat over excited Sid Waddell bellowed out "And the one thing all great athletes like Eric Bristow have in common is..."<laugh>

Bristow has been sacked by Sky for his comments.

If you haven't seen them, he basically said the footballers abused weren't real men and you wouldn't see it happening to rugby or darts players. He originally called the abusers "p**fs" before changing that to *****s and he questioned why the footballers haven't gone back for revenge.

Completely out of touch, ridiculous comments.

One abused player said that a big part of the reason he never came forward was due to the abuse he thought he'd be subjected to from the terraces back then.

Being honest, back then I can't say he was wrong, and I'm not sure of which era he was referring to, but I reckon there's a fair chance a younger me would have joined in. Thankfully times have moved on, but sadly not soon enough for some.

The hotline has received over 250 calls since it's been set up in light of these events.

My favourite is Sid Waddell's well considered study in hyperbole:

"When Alexander of Macedonia was 33, he cried salt tears because there were no more worlds to conquer … Eric Bristow is only 27."
