Ummm yeah they're both wingers who go on runs and take on other players. And they both weren't our main set piece taker.
Totally useless compared to Robert at one end and totally superior to Robert at the other. Compared to max Jonas was better that max and everything expect dribbling.
Why are we even comparing him with former players, from different eras, who played alongside a totally different quality of other players? Bottom line is, at the moment, he's the best we have in that position. We've had a poor quality squad for years and at times he's been a standout player in a struggling team. Right now, he's what we have. If fit he should definitely start. Ideally in a 4-3-3 formation. He's not an 'impact sub' type, so needs to be in the first 11. We might improve on him next season - if so, that's fine. But between now and yhe end of this season, he'd be in my starting 11.
Not disagreeing, would love to have Jonas in the team right now. But he's a more meaningful comparison than Robert.
Jonas was a player that gave everything I really like his attitude. There's no reason to declare a comparison as more or less meaningful.. A player is either better in more areas or he is not.
It's just a discussion. If we're talking about Max then he's a good dribbler that is rarely fit and loves to pretend he's hurt rather than track back. I like watching him when he plays, but the day we get 2 or 3 better players I'll not be bothered to see him go.
No there is - you need to compare like for like, and ASM and Robert excelled in completely different areas. Ginola was a player who strengths were in similar areas to Robert and Jonas was a player who had similar strengths to ASM.
So, as the original al point of the thread was whether or not he should play (as in now - in the current team - not as a notional comparison with Robert, Ginola, or Jonas), then would you play him? If not, who would you play ahead of him and what do you think they offer ahead of Maxi?
If I was to rank them as how much I like them/which one I would put in the team at their prime, it would be: 1. Jonas 2. Ginola 3. ASM 4. Robert 5. HBA
Fair enough that's your opinion and you're entitled to it fella I'll go 1. Ginola 2. Robert 3. Ben Arfa 4. Jonas 5. Max 2 and 3 was difficult for me
Be interested to see our best ever XI (PL era onwards) in a modern 433. What would it be? Given Barton Colo Woodgate Bez Lee Batty Speed Beardo Shearer Ginola Subs: Srnicek, Albert, Cabaye, Dyer, Ferdinand, Solano, Robert.
Yes because the side he was in didn't matter at all in that... Playing under bruce in a 5-4-1 formation with a relegation threatened side is not the same as playing in the side Robert was in with Shearer, Bellamy etc. If other players in the squad who did barely anything for the team until recently deserve more of a chance, than so does ASM. ASM deserves a good run in with an actually decent side.
