Good players tend to make good captains that's my entire point.

This idea we need leaders is just saying we need good players.

 

A team of good players still need leaders. I don’t see the point in restricting yourself to one or the other. If both add value, let’s have both.

And yet Tuchel, Klopp and Pep are in there with world leaders and think they are important. I’ve never heard many too managers say they’re unimportant. What they do say is it’s important for all players to take some form of leadership responsibility. They want all players to lead and generally the better the player, the more they carry that trait. They just think it’s important someone sets the tone so view captains as important. Some players are better suited to that than others.

I like how Pep does it. Every season they get together as players, coaches and select 5 captains with two taking the most senior roles. It’s clever because everyone has then bought in to your structure functions.

We know that. We are saying replace the bad players with better players, and replace the captains with better captains. We want the best of both worlds.

Someone like Max is unlikely to be a leader. But he can be effective for us if we surround him with better players and if two of those guys are natural leaders then that will help him too. Probably him more than most because his lack of professionalism is probably not helping him become the player his talent should allow him to.

Sadly whereas Lascelles and Ritchie do have the professionalism and character traits, their lack of ability means they can’t really deliver the role at this level. I’m sure if you took them and put them into a championship or League One team, they could fulfill that role effectively.

We need leaders of the required quality and we need to raise the level of quality at our club (amongst a lot of other things). The latter is more important than the former short term in my opinion because the quality gap is quite large. But if we can resolve the lack of leadership too then I’d like us to do that. It might be tricky in Jan however, natural leaders tend to be expensive and difficult to get out of clubs at best of times. Nevermind when you’re bottom with no wins staring relegation in the face. Eventually we will need our Kompany but we might have to be patient. We have people who can set the tone and better quality players will bring leadership with them. So I think that addresses both short term, longer term we should look to exploit the benefits captain selections bring by buying natural leaders and finding a system like Man C that adds value to the club.

The top teams have leaders who lead by example.

It’s basic actually. The manager needs the leaders to implement his ideas on the pitch.

Lascelles isn’t a leader. He is a yes man. A very bog standard player.

Shelvey can’t lead because he’s ****.

 

So basically we need some better players than we have who are also professional and the odd player out of them who is a captain.

 

I don’t think you’re gonna get it mate unless you think more multi dimensional. It’s not about one thing or another.

I think your both right. Good players and leaders is what is required.

We have to many snowflake yes players with no characters anyways.
