Quite the opposite is true .

It is BECAUSE of literary knowledge , not in spite of it that i know how poor they are .

Any fool ( thats you by the way ) that equates commercial success , with quality of writing .........well , no more needs to be said.
 
Commerical success is achieved by a writer by having gripped an audience with a concept and the ability to make that concept come to life through there writing ability.

I'm not trying to claim they are shakspearean quality in their use of the english language. Just defending them against the notion that they are poor stories, as there commerical success points to a completely different story ;)

This debate has been going on since classical times. In fact it is so old that a phrase has developed for exactly your opinion, which is "Intellectual snob", where you claim to see some merit (or lack thereof) in something that others cannot see, due to your superiority. The fact that this is a greatly negative term rather shows how well your position is generally regarded.

I would say in most forms of art, creativity and imagination, and the pleasure given to the consumer of the art, is seen as a greater quality than studious technical excellence.

Of course the Harry Potter Books are of cultural worth. Sure they are not the anywhere near the best books written (i have not bothered to re-read them apart from Azkaban (which is brilliant)) . However most people in their 20's first book was probably a Harry Potter book. In a ever evolving technological world where other forms of media have grown in mass popularity with the youth, Harry Potter encouraged kids to read by the millions. Out of that number many will go on to read many books that you might deem culturally worthy but they may never have had they not read HP. That alone, though there are other reasons, makes HP culturally worthy.
 
Beyonce must be making the best music ever written and Kristen Stewart must be the greatest actress on Earth.... or how about we stop equating commercial success with quality?
 
What the **** happened to this thread ? Just took a look and people are talking about the Smurfs, Harry Potter and Beyonce <laugh> Is this transfer window really that bad ?

I agree with this Avatar made 2.7bn dollars - I still think it is ****e on a stick, a pretty ****e, but still ****e. But the opposite isn't true either just because something acquires commercial success doesn't mean it is rubbish.

your obviously missing the point - no-one is trying to suggest that commercial success is the only factor in determining the quality of a piece of writing (or in your example a film or piece of music) - but to try and shrug one of those off as "poor" when it is THE most successful commercialy EVER by a LONG way is just silly.

It's attributing far too much self worth to your own opinion.

p.s. if you go on commercial success alone it would actually mean the best music was by The Beatles, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Led Zepellin, Elton John and Pink Floyd (in that order) -which probably a lot of people would agree with. Commercial success by actors is more difficult to figure out but on all the different lists i can find Tom Hanks is first - again a lot of people would probably agree with that.

I don't think it's the only thing that matters and i don't think it individually determins the quality of the piece of art (book/film/music/etc) but to ignore something that is highly valued by a MASSIVE audience and kept them gripped through 7 books and call them "poor stories" is just plain ridiculous. It shows someone being right up there own arse!

Like I said elsewhere, the story is that he wants to make sure that he gets Suarez and Fabregas, if they are available. That is 65M (and 1) right there. The story is that the Suarez release clause will kick in when (and if) we qualify for the CL proper, and the Fabregas situation resolves itself.

I think the Fabreagas bit is a little stretched. I don't believe Wenger thinks that Cesc will leave Barcelona, but he may want to be certain I suppose.

I think it is going to take time. Not worried yet.
