Yes there is time, but I doubt our midfield targets are some world's top ten players, contested by every decent club on earth, that it would take until August to even make a bid. Our midfield depth would be improved even with above average signings.
For the clubs sake they better hope to make some world class signings, the negativity is already coming in from a lot of fans, and if the needed signings aren't made, all the negativity seen in previous seasons will look like a picnic, there will be a lot of mutiny this time if things don't get done. At this point, it is starting to look like the board simply were bullshitting everybody about big signings just to get people to renew their season tickets, what a surprise really, during season ticket renewal time it was big talk of spending, top players, and now we're hearing the same old story of oh we're trying to get players but we are happy with our squad and believe they can compete for the title.
I can understand Wenger saying he is happy with the squad and that they're strong, but going on to say they're title contenders, well that's just silly, nobody doubts this squad is good, but that's it, they're just good, not world beaters, and there's no proof whatsoever that they're title contenders, on what basis does Wenger say they are title contenders? Ending in the top four by 1 point hardly counts as title contenders, and it's that kind of talk that annoys people.
I agree with you completely - DM is absolutely our need position. Although I do think Ox is being groomed for that spot. It is where he is playing pre-season. The latest rumour is that Fellaini's release clause doesn't become active until August 15th, which (if it is true) might mean that we are reserving our money for him.
april 2013 . Arsenal go into their clash with the champions having picked up four points from seven games against top-five opposition this season. Wenger believes a lack of belief has been costly in those games but is backing his team to demonstrate their new-found confidence against Sir Alex Ferguson’s men. “I personally believe we have been remarkably consistent against the teams who do not fight for the championship,” the manager told Arsenal Player. “Last year we did well against top teams, but this year we have not. and yet with hardly any changes , he thinks we can challenge for the title . Well he doesnt actually believe that . He just thinks that we are stupid enough to believe it again .
I feel the big signing mantra was just a big ruse! They allegedly bid 40mill and 1 pound for Suarez, how I wished Liverpool had called their bluff! As for challenging for the title, don't make me laugh! The good thing is no matter how much of a bad day we are having, spuds always manage to surpass us. 4th spot again is ours this season, particularly if spuds lose Bale. Am I worried? I think I have gone beyond worrying..... I was not expecting any major signing, we are well equipped to secure Champions League again!
I'd say a team with: ------Soldado------- Bale----------Lennon ------Dembele------- --Sandro--Paulinho-- could match us next season. Even if they lose Bale, they could use the money on other decent players. It's especially annoying because I would have been happy if we'd bought Soldado and Paulinho for our undermanned CM and CF spots.
You'd think so, but having seen how heavily Spurs have relied on Bale this season, I think they will badly miss him, how many points has Bale won them this season? Obviously Spurs will feel they can do an Arsenal and manage to cope while losing their main star player, I don't see it happening for them. As for Soldado, he would've been a very good signing for us, Spurs have signed a quality striker, just look at his scoring stats, the guy's as underrated as Higuain.
Don't underestimate a team, even if its Spurs. Remember when we lost our best player, a player who did so much for us and scored so many goals? We still managed to scrape 4th place. Once you take your eye off the game and start underestimating teams, that when you start going messing up.
I think it is only logical and fair that we underestimate Spuds. I think it is a mental thing with them and their fans. Even if they kept Bale I don't think they can cross the threshold. How many opportunities have they passed on to put some daylight between us? I am not too perturbed about where we finish with respect to spuds, even if they had 11 Messis in their team..... What I am more cheesed about is our inability or desire to want to close the gap on the top 3. I find it disappointing that some of our fans are relying on the changes at the top 3 to give us a chance of getting close. Their thinking (flawed imo) is because of the managerial changes at City, Manure and Chelsea presents us with a real chance. I would have been pleased if we had actually improved the quality of our playing staff, rather than rely all 3 teams to have a bad season.
It's unfortunate that we didn't seize the opportunity this transfer window and make some decisive signings and go for the league. Instead we're going through the usual route of a drawn out transfer saga that may or may not last till deadline day.
I think the word decisive and who ever is in charge of transfers at our club is like oil and water. I know some fans will say the transfer window is not shut yet, we should hush it, some will go as far as saying we do not need marquee signings as we already have the crop of players we need and there is no room for improvement, some will even wheel out the we are potless argument..... One thing is evident, we are just not DECISIVE. We are when it comes to selling our talent we are but buying reinforcements..... If Bale had been an Arsenal player, he would have gone for 35mill and the deal would have been concluded weeks ago! You have to wonder if Clubs like Bayern are still strengthening despite winning the treble, how comes we cannot?
I think it is less silly than saying we have "No chance" etc. As I have pointed out, change the result of one single game last season, our Man City home game, and we would have finished second. Wenger did not say that this team were good enough, he was doing what a good manager should and not ****ting on his team. We are not a million miles away from winning this thing. We need maybe 1 or 2 starters to join the team and perhaps 2 to 3 good back-ups. There is a scenario where the current players might be good enough, but I agree with you when you say that isn't very likely. However, finding the right player is important. Just going out and buying any 40M prima donna star is not going to get us where we need to be. We need motivated players that will fit our system and style of play. If we go to sign a player and he doesn't want to come, isn't willing to hand in a transfer request, then **** him. We don't want someone on the team, saying "I'm only here for the money" bringing the team down. Man City didn't win either last year. As for the fans, meh! The proof will be in how we do this season, not who we sign. I'm afraid most Arsenal fans are so negative about our chances by now that they wouldn't know a winning team, if we beat Manchester United 10-0. It was always unlikely that Wenger was going to buy players that would make the fans happy. Even when he was winning he didn't do that. You even have fans still saying Walcott is no good, and needs to be replaced. As for the press, double meh! Every year they say we are going to drop out of the top 4, but we don't. If they say we are going to do it again, I still think we can win something, because it is just them being slightly more wrong than they usually are.
go on , stick a hundred quid on that . I dare ya . Thought not . How about 5- nil ? 3 nil then ? Thought so .....
Ah the defiant optimist who throws his toys out of the pram when too many people start disagreeing with him; so he starts exaggerating with his 10-0's and implying we don't want motivated players who fit the team. We do, and 1-0 would be enough TT. Hell, we could lose to United again as long as we beat Chelsea and City. Losing to all (again) is what people don't want to see.
It always seems odd to me that the pessimists among us don't hesitate to use hyperbole and exaggeration to make a point, "We will never win anything..." & "This player is completely useless..." but if you use it back, it is met with a sense of outrage.
Are you assuming I've said either of those things? Yes, I get "outraged" at the exaggeration you use to distort the arguments of others, but if you think I've said something exaggerated, or I ever do, let me know.
I guess the change the result of 1 game and make all the other variables. We were scrapping for the last champions league spot on the last day for goodness sake! To come on here and say, if we had won against City we would have gotten 2nd...... It is all conjecture, if this and if that, if we had kept hold of RvP, Fabregas and Nasri... We are were we are and we have to deal with that. I really hope fans like you would wake up and smell the coffee! You think the whole world is against our team, just because they are stating the bleeding obvious. I should really give up when I hear utterances like we were not a million miles from winning the thing last season.... I am beginning to think this is a deliberate wind up!
The real problem is that you lot think it is "Obvious", just like when everyone was stating the obvious when they said Kos was a useless **** who was never going to be any good. Always being negative doesn't take a lot of intelligence or imagination, or courage.
