A London man has said he has gifted his ULEZ non-compliant car to the Mayor of London,
Sadiq Khan, in an attempt to avoid the daily £12.50 fee amid the expansion of the Ultra Low Emissions Zone. Popovz Lar says he owns a 2002 Ford Focus which is too old to meet Transport for London's (TfL) rules and so he has come up with a 'genius' loophole.
Mr Lar says he considered scrapping the vehicle but decided against it as it is still drivable. Instead, he claims to have registered
Mr Khan as its new owner and posted the logbook to
TfL's head office, making the Mayor the car's "registered keeper".
He posted on Facebook earlier this week: "I have a 2002
Ford focus, which is not compliant. I considered scrapping it, but it's still good, so I've decided to give the car to the mayor.
"He is now the owner and registered keeper, his new logbook will arrive at the TfL head office in a few weeks. As the car is still insured, taxed, and has a valid MOT, I shall continue to drive it, until Sadiq comes to collect it. Perfectly legal."
The move has widely amused people on social media. One person simply commented: "Genius." A different user said: "Brilliant idea we should all do this."
Others, however, suggested there may be some technical difficulties in the plan. One commenter said: "Great idea, but it's not taxed so may be clamped or towed away, but the bill will go to him."
Another said: "So this is what will happen. The mayor is the registered keeper (NOT THE LEGAL OWNER). He will get the fine. He will have to say he doesn’t know who the driver is.
"He will then have to do some checks (legal or not) as to who the previous registered keeper was. Then he will nominate you. It will take time, but the likelihood is that he will just send an email and cancel the fine!"
