Way off topic (only got mars bars left in the box of heroes I got off santy) but, why is Football called Soccer by the yanks etc?
We sort of invented the game and called it football, the governing bodies are called FIFA and UEFA no mention of soccer there, it is played predominantly with the feet hence football, so why do we pander to all this Americanisation of our glorious game of FOOTBALL?
Any other of these words from over the pond annoy people or is it just me?

In the early days of this game, an association was set up in England to codify the rules. The game was sometimes referred to as "association football," probably to distinguish it from other variations. "association" was abbreviated to "assoc.," so the game was nicknamed "soccer."

Since the term "football" was already used in the U.S. to describe a different game, the name "soccer" stuck.

I do not think that the usa had an orginised game called football in the 1870s...so english football predates the usa football which did not take off until the 1920s....why the hell would you call a game football and keep the name if you only touched the ball with your foot for 1% of the game if that..astounding yank logic...... Since the term "football" was already used in the U.S. to describe a different game, the name "soccer" stuck.oh no it was not !!football usa style did not exist in the 1860s they were to busy making a living and surviving to play sports especially on their day off which was for worship of another kind!the original use of soccer was to distinguish it from rugby football...and at least they had the sense to drop the football bit and you know the yanks only sense is in their wallet.

The term soccer sometimes gets used by the traditionalist rugby folk who cling on to the full name of their game..I do not know why some countries in the world still call it soccer...perhaps its the dominance of the american media or perhaps its the money men of football who still percieve the usa an a sort of el dorado an untapped gold mine...so they do not want to offend the land which they want to plunder....

In all reality orginised football started in the uk and by the time it was professional it was called football.all the national bodies use football in their name and so do fifa and uefa..........so whats the problem.....let the americans call it soccer if they want but dont let them takeover..football as an entity is strong enough to rebuff those idiotic americans who feel the need to protect their minority sport( in world terms its like cricket)football is the greatest team sport in the world and no amount of yank flim flam will change that!

when football as a sport came to USA amarican football was already established and so they used the nickname soccer instead and also australia,south africa and new zealand call rugby - football and outher parts of the world use the amarican name to i dont see the problem at all
 
To distinguish between the traditional 'football' (played with the feet) and the variation invented at Rugby School, we split our clubs into Association Football Clubs (like Sunderland AFC) and Rugby Football Clubs like, say, Bath or Harlequins. The American game is really just a variation on the Rugby type and became known as American Football. But then our traditional football gained ground in the U.S. and they needed a word to distinguish it from their established 'football'. So they've gone back to our Association name (which evolved into 'soccer' as Wigan has already said above).

Really, the Americans have done exactly what we did - except that in their circumstances, it needed to be done the other way round. There, soccer needed an alternative name whereas here RFCs had to be created. It could have gone the other way - the first soccer club in the world outside the British Isles was the Boston Orioles, founded in Massachusetts in about 1869 (I think). In fact, the U.S.A. had a soccer club before Sunderland did (shhhhh!!!!!!!) It didn't last. The Rugby type suited American tastes better, and soccer faded out.
 
I just gave trying to keep them right.

The yanks who do like watching the EPL do call it football its the ones who are knobs who try to tell me its called soccer & tell me we should call it soccer. My reply is we invented the game pal & we called it football so **** off.

Another yank game i ****ing hate is Baseball or (International rounds) i would rather watch paint dry. They call the league trophy the world series now how can you call it a world series when only the ****ing yanks play in it. They ****in hate when i give them **** about that
 
i like NBA and i like NFL (Only redzone though because i couldnt watch one game with all the stops) but i hate baseball it crap it boring and everyone says its the best amarican sport <doh>
 
In fact, 'soccer' took many years to die out here. There must be plenty of old lads on here who received a 'Charles Buchan's Soccer Annual' for Xmas in the 1950s. And Len Shackleton was known as the Clown Prince of Soccer. We used 'soccer' a lot in U.K. until around the 1960s.
 
It's the same over here in Oz, it drives me nuts, I keep telling them that only homosexuals call it soccer but they don't take any notice. They call their game footy , its real name is Aussie Rules, there is only one rule, if you catch it , you can kick it, and they reckon that it was invented by the Irish but they had to simplify it so that the Aussies could play it, I firmly believe that, having met them and lived amongst them for quite a while now.
Anyway my time in the penal colony is up, I fly back to mother England tomorrow night and I will definitely be at the match on Sunday, can't wait, hope I can sober up, I've picked up some terrible drinking habits out here in Oz, its so f---ing hot and there's nothing else to do.

I don't think there is any evidence to suggest football (which covers many sports) was invented by the English. Gaelic Football is an ancient sport, going back hundreds of years and like all ball sports it has emerged and evolved. Games like soccer, rugby, American Football, Australian Rules Football and Gaelic Football basically all evolved out of people kicking balls around and then slowly coming up with rules and starting new games. Even now, the rules of all of these sports continue to change. There are records of a form of Gaelic Football going back to 1670, but many catch and kick ball games go much further back than that. So soccer was probably a name chosen as a way of defining the game you know now.
 
No surprise it was English Public schoolboys that came up with the **** name of soccer, long before American Football Existed.

I cant stand the term soccer, but it was not the Americans that coined it, it was us and this person Charles Wreford-Brown.

btw i love NFL and Baseball, but cant stand the term World Series (for Baseball) or World Champions (for NFL) makes my blood boil, but i still love the sports.

Once you figure out the rules the NFL is not that bad mate but i do hate all the stops & starts it takes 4 hrs to watch a 1 hour game

HA ha world champions of their own little world..........gotta love their narrow mindness.
