They will. Lessons have to be learned though. The worst thing would be if people at the club come away with the conclusion that a busted business model still works.
Just reading an article linking Liverpool with McCarthy (yawn), but it also said his contract expires in 2019. That makes his next contract a very important one for him...does he sign a new one here or look for a bigger move. Depends if he thinks he will get game time elsewhere. I suspect everything has been on hold here since we (and any players concerned) didn't know which league we'd be in. Time to test the water with Alex.
I'd be very surprised if there were teams trying to sign McCarthy that are better than us. He has had a good run, but there is a reason he has been a back up keeper at PL level for most of his career. This summer we need to be signing a new keeper (2 if Forster goes) as we only have 2 unless there is a young keeper I am forgetting. Jack Rose is the young keeper, but pretty sure his contract is up. Sign someone to compete with McCarthy for the number 1 spot, sell Forster and sign a young promising keeper is what I would be looking to do in the summer.
He’s been nothing short of brilliant recently. If Forster goes, sure, sign a young #2, but I see no reason to be looking for a better keeper (other than always looking to improve, obviously).
I should imagine that Forster will go - it suits him to be paying first team football and it serves us to get him off the wage book. PS for Liverpool - there's a World Cup coming up - I'm sure that will offer the chance to see all sorts of NON-SAINTS players to salivate over.
Just some maths, because i have nothing better to do. on Forster's current reported wage of 70k, He has £14m left on his current 4 year contract. Lets say we pay a replacement half that (35k is less than most our second choices). It means we'll have £7m + the fee we get from Forster minus tax to spend on a replacement that needs to be better than Forster to make it worthwhile. of course, I'm not entirely sure why the team that's trying to buy Forster doesn't buy the keeper we buy if he costs half the wages and is as good as him. so really the only options are to buy a prospect for much less than £7m + fee and make a small profit and hope he's good enough or keep Forster.
