I think the main problem was that he was a foreign coach who had only managed in League 1 and didn't come with any Premier League credentials other than being a good player but one who lacked discipline. If it was an ex Sunderland legend who got the job in those circumstances then it would probably have gone down better but I don't think he came with the credentials to get the full respect from the dressing room from the start. By criticising them in public he would have pushed them further away, particularly when players there have been managed by the likes of Fergie.
There were far too many new players he had to try and gel together straight away and it was obvious he had no idea as to what his best team was which would give the impression that he didn't know what he was doing. He should have got the dressing room onside and given them the chance to perform for him but he didn't. I would suggest PDC's next stop is a spell working alongside Nigel Adkins, he may well learn a bit about man management.
