I don't see what's so bad about doing it in front of the rest of the team, if someone isn't putting the effort in, then by letting them know it in front of everyone else it might make the others think that they should put more effort in to avoid them becoming the focus.
Not sure he 'abused' the players, he made sure they knew when they'd made a mistake, but I think 'abused' is too strong (I might be wrong though).
The problem he had was that he needed to bring in a whole new squad, but only got half that. As far as I am aware none of his new signings were complaining, it's those that were there from previous regimes.
