I don't see what's so bad about doing it in front of the rest of the team, if someone isn't putting the effort in, then by letting them know it in front of everyone else it might make the others think that they should put more effort in to avoid them becoming the focus.

Not sure he 'abused' the players, he made sure they knew when they'd made a mistake, but I think 'abused' is too strong (I might be wrong though).

The problem he had was that he needed to bring in a whole new squad, but only got half that. As far as I am aware none of his new signings were complaining, it's those that were there from previous regimes.
 
Their new Italian winger was part of the revolt, so it was all different players, old and new. I guess Di Canio did manage to unite the dressing room in the end for a common goal.... he just didn't expect the common goal was to get rid of him!!

I think the problem was less that he criticised in front of the team than that he criticised them in the media.

Oddly enough Di Canio reminded me of some of the demented, self deluded, raving NCO's that I remember, behaviour encouraged by their own commanders.
 
Di Canio is a character, that's why he was brought in but he needed to get the balance right between being a manager and being PDC, if he got that balance he would be a top manager. However their last league win was against Newcastle last season which shows how they rode their luck towards the end of the season.
 
A friend of mine tried to get his West Ham shirt signed by Di Canio back when he was a player there. He knew someone who worked at the Club who could easily get hold of Paulo, although he did warn him that the guy was an "asshole" and might not do it. Anyway, he tried, and failed, even though he got to PDC on the back of a winning game, when the guy wasn't busy, and had no reason not to sign the shirt other than he's a total bastard. Also he makes no secret of being a complete facist. It should come as no suprise that lots of people don't enjoy working with him.
