I never aimed to upset or offend anyone but if anyone is offended then I'm not really bothered either way. It was a bit of banter, it came from my mate saying he was in Hull over the weekend and got bored so he said "what rhymes with Hull?"

If anyone has failed to see the funny side then that's their problem. Feel free to write a crappy poem about the North-East, you can even slag off Newcastle and it's inhabitants, I won't be offended I promise. I'll see the funny side.

Originallambrettaman seems to have grasped the concept.

I don't know why so many people from Hull get wound up about the banter. OK, so I've already admitted I'm not from Hull so it maybe isn't my place to comment, but I just can't grasp why a lot of them let themselves get wound up.

I guess it just winds them up that their city is the butt of so many jokes without it necessarily being true. I've not been there so I'm not going to judge. Did see the episode of Coast that featured the city and it seemed ok on that to be honest.

Us Toon fans get fed up of the media and fan based derision revolving around being delusional, calling for messiahs and all the crock so I guess it is just the same. It is the lack of truth that gets our goat.

I know a lot of people from Hull abuse us Beverlonians for being posh, arrogant and stuck up, whilst we abuse them for being on benefits and living in a ****hole, but at the end of the day neither statement is true and we all know it, because we've all seen a lot of both towns.
I can kind of grasp why they get pissed off when people from outside of East Yorkshire do it, because more often than not the people saying it have never been to Hull and don't have any idea what it's really like (not bad really!).

Which is why I wouldn't say it is a dump, because I haven't been and jumping on a bandwagon isn't my thing. Knowing AldridgePrior though I can't believe he meant to offend anybody though. As he says there's just alot of things than rhyme with Hull.

Lets all shake hands and start slagging some team off that really deserves it!

Just about every person you meet from outside of the city always puts in a snide comment, it gets very tiresome. you ask them how many times they have been to the city and the answer is always 0. it all came from a book written by a cockney. one of my tutors at the time also worked for the local newspaper and was part of the group that helped show the author around the city. they showed him the art gallerys, the theaters, the old town that still remains from WW2. then to top it off they showed him around the actual home of William Wilberforce (The main influence in abolishment of slavery) which is still standing.

Instead he thought he would be a smart arse and go for popularity vote by victimising a northern town and wrote about some of the poorest areas of the city.

and ever since we have had to put up with a stupid amount of abuse. one time i was out in the midlands went to a cinema to catch a movie with a few friends and someone caught wind of my accent and decided to make a comment as he knew where i was from, its becoming ridiculous and you would only understand if you became a victim of it yourselves.

Yeah even Blackadder made a joke about Hull in series 4, with General Melchett delivering the punchline. Hull bashing has become a bit of a cliche.

Was interesting to see (on Coast) that WW was from there. What a legend that guy was, should be so much more famous for his contributions to humanity than he is.

Sunderland? Boro? Leeds? <whistle>

True, without Willy there'd be no Tiote lining up each week. Well, not unless he was in Shearer's Bar lining up glasses to lick them clean.

Or lining up their boots to clean them.

Hmm gonna have to watch Amazing Grace tonight now haven't watched that in ages. Good film about WW in case you haven't seen it.

The fact is, that Hull is the world's greatest city, it's full of the world's greatest people and anyone who can't see that is either blind, has never been there, is stupid, or is all of the above.

I'm currently in Hong Kong, it's my 86th visit to this fine city, it's my second home and I love the place, but it's not nearly as cool as Hull(though I am willing to accept that it outdoes us on the neon front).

I'm still confused by that light and music show to tell the story of Hong Kong.

Can't help you there.

I had dinner tonight on the waterfront on Kowloon side and the light show was going on in the background, I've seen it many times now and it's it's quite impressive, but if it's trying to tell a story, I'm afraid it's lost on me.

considering hull is close to 30 square miles and your friend coming in from norwich would more than likely come in over the humber bridge and traveled approximately 1 maybe 2 miles down boothferry road and a small portion of anlaby road to reach the stadium, your friend didnt really have much of a view of the city travelling down 2 roads of a fairly large city.

i was born in and lived in hull for 22 years of my life. it has its good parts... it has its bad parts... if someone has a bad experience.. ill sympathise with them if its based on FACT, but the fact is 95% of people who have something to say have never ever experienced the city... a trip down one road to the football stadium does not really count.

as mentioned before. the city has some rather nice architecture and history, filled with alot of museums and a decent sized art gallery. it houses 2 top flight rugby league teams which has attracted some of the biggest players in the world. one more recent being Willie Mason.
the city has the worlds only underwater aquarium. has an engineering marvel with once the worlds largest suspension bridge and the current largest bridge that also acts as a footbridge. the fort of fort paull on the outskirts of the city held the crown jewels during WW2. also during WW2 we took the brunt of the air raids outside london attracting bombs that would have crippled most of the country. we are the home to Amy Johnson (dont know who that is... read a book).

ive yet to see one single educated opinion that trashes on the city. insted most believe and repeat the **** thrown about by a cockney with a grudge.

now can we shut up and talk about football. because im really starting to see why my family took the decision to get out of Durham. and from the amount of educated opinion banded about this thread. im glad i was brought up in hull

He came in from Kendal and came by the train, he got there hours before kick off, so probs walked around a fair amount of the area. I'm just saying what he's saying and at the end of the day if someone called where I'm from a **** hole I really wouldn't care. It was only a joke and it is quite pathetic how serious people are taking this!

On a serious note, I ran a 20 mile race many years ago in Hull and detected something very strange about the place. It was only much later I read about the terrible bombing it received during WWII which, apparently, caused damage to 96% of buildings, much worse than London.

The strangeness was because of the newness of many of the buildings.
