I attended a match at Stradey, towards the end of his playing days. He was close to the all time scoring record, and expectations were high that he would reach the goal during the game.
A young full back was making his debut, and he had a nightmare time with his penalty kick attempts, missing most, if not all, of his opportunities.
Bennett chipped away at the potential record, but time was running down. Eventually, Scarlets had a penalty in front of the posts, so expectations were that he would take the kick. He turned to the young full back, and told him to take it. The young lad duly kicked the goal, thereby rescuing his game somewhat.
The game ended with Bennett still shy of his record due to that act of generosity.
He was that kind of a man. Humble and generous.
Far too young
