It is with great sadness that the Irish FA has learned of the passing of its esteemed former player and manager Billy Bingham at the age of 90.

Billy holds a unique place in the football hearts of Northern Ireland in that he both played at and managed in World Cup final tournaments with Northern Ireland, being part of Peter Doherty’s historic team of 1958 in Sweden and then managing Northern Ireland in the 1982 and 1986 finals.

Billy had an illustrious playing career starting at Glentoran and moving to Sunderland, Luton Town, Everton and Port Vale, earning 56 caps between 1951 and 1964 and scoring 10 goals.

RIP <rose>

He was the Manager when George Best played for NI against Wales at The Vetch.

They trained at the BP Llandarcy Sports Ground ahead of the game. Here are Billy’s, George’s and Derek Dougan’s autographs.

I was on the North Bank, as usual, for this game.
Such was the fervour of the home crowd towards Best, the Irish thought they were playing at home. <laugh>

I was on the North Bank in my usual spot. I remember loads of young girls in the crowd behaving like it was a Beatles concert every time George got the ball!

Best was up there with Elvis and The Beatles. Unique.

When asked what he had done with the vast fortune he had earned, he said, and I paraphrase,

" I spent £x,000,000.00 on booze, £y,000,000.00 on gambling, and £ z,000,000.00 on girls. The rest of my wealth, well, I squandered that. " <laugh>

Wasn’t that (allegedly) the time when he was in bed with Marjorie Wallace - the current Miss World - and room service delivered another bottle of champagne? <laugh><laugh><laugh>

Not aware of that, but sounds par for the course.

I first heard him say it on the ' Wogan Show '. Wogan asked the question, and it was clearly rehearsed, so they both sparkled, and winked, when Best gave the response. It was quite funny at the time. Wogan had a way with him. <laugh>

On the Miss World rumours, George said …

"They say I slept with seven Miss Worlds. I didn't. It was only four. I didn't turn up for the other three." <laugh><laugh><laugh>

Former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Bobby Hope has died aged 78.

Hope was part of the sides that won the 1966 League Cup and 1968 FA Cup in a career that saw him play 409 times for the club from 1960 to 1972.

Hope - who scored 42 times for the Baggies - also won seven caps for Scotland in the late 1960s.

Legendary Wales and British and Irish Lions captain and fly-half Phil Bennett has died at the age of 73.

Bennett was a key figure in Wales' golden era, helping them win two Five Nations Grand Slams in the 1970s.

He also starred in the Lions' historic unbeaten tour of South Africa in 1974 and produced moments of magic in his 20 appearances for the Barbarians.

He is regarded as one of the greatest players to wear the fabled number 10 shirt for Wales and the Lions.

In their statement announcing Bennett's passing, Scarlets said he was "one of the all-time legends of the game and widely regarded as the greatest player to wear the Scarlets jersey".

Bennett made eight Test appearances for the Lions over two tours, becoming only the second Welshman to captain the Lions on their 1977 tour of New Zealand.

The Llanelli RFC great won 29 caps for Wales, retiring in style in 1978 by captaining his country to a second Grand Slam in three years with victory over France in his final game.

After retiring, Bennett became an OBE in 1979 and was inducted to the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2005.

RIP <rose>

I woke up to this news very early this morning, but couldn't get my head around it.

Phil Bennett taken from us, whilst the likes of Johnson, Putin and Blair still breathe and walk the streets. Wtf ?

Wales, and Llanelli, in particular, are now in deep mourning for one of it's greatest sons.

Having lived, and worked, the other side of Loughor Bridge, I know what he meant to the locals.
I joined them in my admiration.
There was SO much to admire, both on, and off, the pitch.

Many words have already been written about him, and I like these, almost above all else.

" They've taken our coal, our water, our steel.
They buy our houses and live in them for a fortnight every year.
What have they given us ?
Absolutely nothing.

We've been exploited, controlled and punished by the English - and that's who we are playing this afternoon ".

Welsh Captain, Phil Bennett's pre match team talk before the game v England, 1977.

RIP Phil Bach, you giant among Welshmen. <rose>
