Have to say that the club and Speakman deserve some serious credit in turning down some serious advances for our best talent.
I know you are not his greatest fan but that is a very telling statement you just gave. Sounds like we won't be messed around and strong willed to turn down some tempting offers. Onwards and upwards. Enjoy the match today with your weeman mate

Cheers mate.

I honestly try to be reasonable and logical. And fair does here. Could have been a different feeling today if he rolled over and sold Roberts and others. There was certainly an opportunity to do so.

Do you think we will get back in to talks with Roberts about a new contract now?

Wtf happened with Cannon, Everton really are a shambles of a club especially how they handle young players. The info I was given on this was either wrong, which I doubt, or Everton panicked when they couldn't get their targets in.

Having said that I was also told, by a different lad, that we'd approached Jonny Evans for a years contract ...

... he's just done that at Man Utd <laugh>

Overall I'm very happy with the business, especially the way we weren't a pushover in letting players go.

It's fair to say that I haven't seen most of these signings play, so I can't be certain we've improved the squad, but I trust that the team have got it right long term, even if we take a backwards step over the next 6 months as everyone adapts.

The one thing we didn't get was that CDM but it's a weird position now tactically. If you look at the best/most expensive players playing that role in the Prem, I don't think they are particularly similar. They do different things. Given that the best ones go for £80-115m now, it might be in our interests to try and develop one of our existing players to specialise in that role. They're all young enough learn.
Good post mate. I don't think any club will have a perfectly balanced squad and given we're in the middle of a massive transition from L1 it looks pretty good to me. We're always going to look at what could be done better and where there's room for improvement but it's looking pretty good and we'll give most teams a game I reckon.

Who would you like to see developed in the role out of interest, I have the tactical nous of a cheese sandwich so no idea really <laugh>

Really important this. Not that players won't be sold, they are sold by every club. But to draw a line in the sand that says you can't have any player on the cheap, and you can only have them when we are ready to sell.

That's started with Stewart's fee. Good signs.

Best phrase of the thread.

When Stewart was first mooted to be leaving I was completely gutted, however this saga has dragged on so long I was more than happy to see him go especially at the fee we got for him.
Don’t wish the lad Ill and hope he continues with his fitness but not against us when we visit St Mary’s.
Also sorry to see Gooch leaves, bleeds red and white that lad also hoping Embo’s loan gets him back to his best as I for one would have him back in a heartbeat.
OaU and happy to put my trust in the back room staff HTL.

Word of caution. Players need to settle and big changes are rarely good, many foreign players who sometimes struggle. I think long term a cracking window but it might not go to plan immediately.
International break will help in the immediate short term, hopefully they get a few behind closed doors games in with the new lads. But agree, we will need to be patient with them
