The Recess is an adjournment of business set in the Westminster calendar as beginning 21st July. You may recall what happened when he tried to prorogue Parliament early. He will probably not be able to call a General Election in the middle of summer either with a huge majority as he requires the monarch’s permission to dissolve Parliament and several precedents exist for it not being allowed.
Boris is not going to be quitting because he is a narcissist who, in his own mind, is some sort of Churchillian figure. Margaret Thatcher resigned when several long-standing reliable ministers told her that she could not win a leadership vote. Boris has surrounded himself with sycophants that he deemed would be no threat to his position. Ultimately this has destroyed his government as it fails to deliver on policy and has even failed to complete his key election pledge, “Get Brexit Done”.
Once Parliament has risen for the summer, both the Conservatives and Labour might be leaderless.
There was an article in the Telegraph last week about how the Tories were plotting to get rid of Boris. The 1922 Committee, which controls leadership elections, is up for re-election and supporters of the likes of Jeremy Hunt are planning to stuff it with anti-Boris MPs. They can then add a new rule that will force a leadership election if the Committee receives more than 25 per cent letters of no confidence and will not be time limited. Since more than 40 per cent of MPs voted against Boris last time, getting 25 per cent to force a new vote should be no problem.
So Dead Man Walking Johnson will be gone in a couple of months as well as Charisma-less Starmer. That will probably still leave us with two parties that no-one wants to elect.
