Defoe does not fit our style of play. Be amazed if this happens. Would go against everything we seem to stand for. At 39 I am not keen. Would give us a boost off the pitch but it I doubt would add much. I just hope the owner has more sense than us fans, we dont need romantaic signings, we need pragmatic ones. Johnson must be wondering what the world is coming to if this happens. He needs support from the people at the top, this is not it
I’ll get hammered for this but if that’s what we’re going for and Defoe ends up the striker option, as much as I like him, I’d be disappointed with that.Hume
Roberts
Striker
CM
CB
Is what we need, that'd make for a good window if we can get Roberts and three more of that sort of quality confirmed.

We’ve been at our best playing with a high press, with pace and with intensity. Broadhead was often integral to that, I’d far rather go for an option closer to what he offers (like the kid at Villa) than the romantic option.
I think of it like the Ronaldo deal at Man Utd. More talented than most of his teammates but ultimately detrimental to the team as a whole.
If the whole team has to change its philosophy and the way it plays to accommodate him I personally can’t see how it wouldn’t upset the balance of the squad.Defoe is a team player though, unlike Ronaldo. He's selfish in front of goal as a good striker should be but he wouldn't upset the balance of the squad like a Ronaldo would.

This is meant as no sleight on Defoe as a player or a person.
He wouldn’t be a starterIt'd be a minor tweak to the formation, I don't see it as a problem. No need to change philosophies or anything. We'd still have four at the back so we'd have that stability it'd just need an adjustment or two in midfield.
1 in 2 goalscorers are like gold dust, you find a way to fit them in.
He wouldn’t be a starter
Probably add several thousand to our home gates.
IMO - after the initial convo was had yday, I say we agree to it. Someone of Defoe's skill, experience and professionalism doesn't come along often.
He personally mentored Maja off his own back when he was he last time. You don't buy that sort of personal accountability to have the will to want to improve others around you.
I thought we did medicals first these days?Sunderland are set to complete the signing of Patrick Roberts, with the winger scheduled to have a medical in the coming days.
However, Roberts is expected to join Lee Johnson’s squad, with the Sky Sports Transfer Centre (17:32) revealing that the deal is at a very advanced stage.

There were ppl who said he was finished b4 he joined us the first time.Find it hard to believe there is people that genuinely wouldn’t have him back![]()
Defoe has played as a lone striker, and as part of a topt two. However he has also played in the hole behind the main striker.I'm torn on this one. I love JD (despite his Moyes comments) and he is the ultimate pro but where does he fit into our team? He can't play the Broadhead role (wide attacker) and isn't going to dislodge Stewart. Does he come as an impact sub, or will this mean a change in formation?
It looks like it could be happeningI stayed away from social media all weekend as deleted twitter from my phone. Is this really happening?
To save my soul from having to go onto RTG at a time when we are in bad form *shudder*, can somebody say who of the ITKs from RTG thinks it might happen?
