Hardly the type of message to send out on the BBC or anywhere for that matter. So what happens if the rest of the team decide they've got carte blanche to wander around wherever they feel like?

Well towards the end Cahill and Stones were edge of the box trying to take people on and make things happen, Rose was a left winger. Rooney and Sterling were picking up the ball really deep and trying to lump it back into the box. That seemed the wrong way round too. It was all just a mess again.

I really couldn't believe it when I read that - Rooney isn't THAT good and I think Sam should have left him out of his plans!!! <ok>

I watched the interview with Little Sam and couldn't believe it. Rooney is not a greatly experienced midfielder so needs guidence and structure to build from not "do what ever you bally well want!". I supported Sam's appointment, but that could be the single most stupid thing an England manager has ever said! Well maybe not ever, there was Hoddle afterall!

    Bah!

And sadly, when ITV have the live coverage, there still is. Still talking inane, banal tripe.
He makes Andy Townsend sound sharp and knowledgeable about football ! <yikes>

A snippet from an article in the EDP on Angus Gunn - shame we couldn't have signed him up on a contract - "The Norfolk-born keeper went on to save three penalties as City won 6-5 prompting Guardiola to ask the 20-year-old about his impressive penalty-saving exploits" Crikey, I don't think I've seen Ruddy save 3 penalties in the 7 or 8 years I've had a season ticket!!!

His family moved to Manchester. As he was only like 14 or 15 or something, he went with his family and we got pennies in compensation. Massive shame, big prospect.

I was wrongly optimistic about Sam's appointment, but that comment about Rooney and saying before the game he'd be happy with a point have put me right off him.

No manager should be happy with a point, should always go out for a win and accept nothing else.

That p*ssed me off from the start. Saying in a Press conference just before. "A draw would be a good result" is not what I (or most fans) want to hear from a new manager. Should always state "We will set up and go out to win" No matter who the opponent, let alone a team who we would be favorites against.

I think he will turn it around. You could see before the game and on the sidelines that he was very nervous, and had obviously dreamt and work for that moment all his career. What you don't want is that coming across to the Players, and effect how they set out on the pitch. It seemed to show in that game. I hope now that big debut is over, and he's had the experience. Hopefully we will start seeing an influence.

As a starting statement, He's shown no leadership, confidence, or positivity. With no sign of a new style, selection or formation that lead to another depressing performance. Not an ideal way to introduce yourself to the world as England Manager.

True, maybe he will settle in. But I was hoping for a manager who wouldn't be afraid to make the big calls like dropping a big name player who isn't inform, but worryingly it looks like Sam won't do that.

Can't have a player who thinks they're bigger than the team and can do what they want, got to have discipline.

Mike Bassett would do a better job. Is he available again?

From today's BBC website - "Rooney, winning his 116th cap, mainly played a deep midfield role inSunday's 1-0 win over Slovakia, which was new boss Sam Allardyce's first in charge. Allardyce saidpost-match it was "not for me to say" what Rooney's position was and he "played wherever he wanted".But Rooney, 30, said: "I played in that role and helped us win the game - too much is getting made about it." Speaking to Sky Sports, the Manchester United captain added: "I've done it my whole career and suddenly it's big news. It's not a big thing and I think there's a big overreaction to it."
Rooney's position on the field for club and country has been has been widely discussed this season and England's record goalscorer did not touch the ball once in the Slovakia penalty area during the World Cup qualifier in Trnava.
"With Rooney in a deep-lying midfield role for most of the match, Harry Kane was isolated up front and it killed his game," BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton said in a column for the Daily Mail.
"Rooney can't pick and choose where he plays - it's not a testimonial. He is a lovely passer and technician but if he's not playing to Kane's strengths then the whole team suffer.

Just who the hell does he think he is????

Don't get me wrong, I'd love it if SN had a really good game, scored, created assists etc...at which point, I'd happily eat my words, my hat...and everyone else's Brussels sprouts <ok>

I see from today's BBC Gossip column that Peter Shilton has said that Rooney should have quit after the Euros and Pulls could walk from West Brom to be replaced by Woy!!! <yikes>
