Think JM played a bit of a game in the build up to Old Trafford if I'm honest.

The rumours have gone back to the end of pre season, I find it very hard to believe it was a way of disrupting Fonte for our game. Fonte would have known the score weeks ago, the lack of social media (club & personal) around that time around his return heavily implies there was genuine interest from elsewhere.

Why would either of those things be an issue?

Because you can't have it both ways. If the club has no power, then it was just simply chance that Fonte changed his mind and they deserve no credit for him staying, just as they would not deserve blame if he left.

If the club through their actions were able to keep Fonte at the club then they may deserve credit (or blame I suppose, if you don't like Fonte), but then they may deserve blame (or credit) had he left.

My pointing out the flaws in this logic used by many on here to defend the club regardless of outcome via conflicting arguments is not a criticism of the club or the move. It's a criticism of the posters.

Fonte's low profile suggests he was open to the possibility of a move, but handled it the right way by keeping it in house. No problem with someone considering all options.....he wouldn't want to look as treacherous as Lallana did with his badge slapping. So either the club talked him round or he was told that it wasn't going to happen, so therefore he faced making an unseemly struggle (which I don't think Jose would want). It is also possible that United never put in a concrete offer or they accepted no as an answer from Saints. Fonte was never such a game changer that Mourinho would consider making a fuss. Reflects well on both parties.

The club did well in making Fonte change his mind. Fonte did well in not acting a ass and listening to the club.

Joe Hart is in a difficult position. He's had a bad summer, but still remains a good keeper who ostensibly is England's number one. Has a real problem if he can't find a team where he is the main GK....I didn't expect this to happen. His starting place for England is under threat.

Nonsense, sorry. Take this through -

If Fonte, who ultimately had the power, had decided to leave, would it have been the fault of the board had that gone through? No.

The board were doing everything they could to persuade Fonte to stay. It worked. Therefore do they deserve just a modicum of credit? Yes. Does Fonte for not kicking up a fuss? Yes. They both do.

A combination of all those things, I think.

Had Man U come in with a formal say, 12m bid it would have applied a lot more pressure on both Fonte and Saints. But like you said, Fonte was not worth the trouble either in terms of money or effort for Man U.

But also Fonte and Saints being able to work things out is still a credit to both parties. Unless Fonte pouts through the season, I guess. But I really don't think he will.

Everything doesn't need to be an absolute - all the credit/all the blame.

If Jose had gone, it's not whitewashing the board of all the blame, it's accepting the fact that if an agent and player are set on something, as a club you're left in a pretty difficult position, to put it mildly. And if that move is forced through, you can say "they should have forced the player to stay" but that's kinda unrealistic these days, and often unwise.

The fact he's stayed, absolutely they deserve credit for helping persuade him his future is here, and he deserves credit and a lot of respect for taking his career forward at a place he's loved and somewhere he holds a lot of responsibility. Like the anti-Lallana essentially.

He was atrocious along with the rest of our team. People are too quickly to blame Hart, or Rooney for that matter.

Hart has been a beacon of Man City's hideous defence over the past couple of years. Keepers go through bad patches just like any other player, they're just scrutinised more.

He's in the top 3 for England keepers at the moment and there's not much to choose between them.

Feel sorry for hart, yea he had a bad summer and made some stupid mistakes but every keeper does. Outfield players have bad games all the time but keepers seem to get highlighted more. He's still in the top 5 keepers in the league for me, and would walk into majority of number one spots bar the top 4.

Butland is injured, so it should be Forster or Hart. And seeing as Forster is starting for his club, it should be him.

I don't rate Forster any higher than Hart. Both make **** ups, both very good keepers.

The same people who were setting up to whitewash the board of any responsibility if Fonte left are now giving the board credit for Fonte staying.

You really do black and white only don't you. No-one was "whitewashing". They were saying there is not much the board can do if the player truly wants to go. If they have managed to convince him to stay then yes they deserve credit for doing so but if they hadn't managed to persuade him then does that mean they should take the blame?
