It is annoying that some of this twitter names leave you thinking who the hell is that? @s04 is apparently FC Schalke 04. Why aren't they Schalke04 so we all understand?

A shorter name on Twitter gives others more characters to use when tweeting. Before Twitter let you follow comment chains so easily (and before it was particularly popular), it was quite important to have a short username if you wanted a discussion. It's why I'm @VJ, but have so few tweets - I registered when almost no one was using it, and thought it was even more pointless than many think it is now until I started hearing about it in the mainstream news.
