Terrific result....they never let up all game. Always a possibility of a medal, but this wasn't one that had been pencilled in. I saw an interview recently and they were saying Hockey needed a medal from the women to ensure good funding over the next few years. They have it now. Well done to them.
And of course, this fantastic achievement is the direct result of funding, which allows the players to concentrate full time on hockey, just like the cyclists, gymnasts, swimmers etc. I never buy Lottery tickets, but you have to admit, that money is well spent when it comes to the Olympics.
The Bolt/De Grasse bromance remains hilarious. De Grasse runs a lifetime best by a mile to try to beat him in the 200m semifinal; Bolt slows down just enough, while watching De Grasse all the way, to ensure that he crosses the line a hair ahead. please log in to view this image ...and Justin Gatlin misses out. Good.
A reasonable result in the 3000m steeplechase with the gold and bronze going to Kenya. Pity we didn't get all three Kenyans on the podium!!! Along with Johan Blake!!! But our old friend LaShawn Merritt is through. It paid dividends to have Gemeli in Bolt's group as he was forced to run a fast time helping him to qualify ahead of the your friend Justin. Who is going to be the next "person to loathe" as Justin goes off into the sunset? Great to see 3 Europeans in the final including Lemaitre. With Bolt there, all the finalists should run a sub 20 second time.
I know it is strange to say but it was good to see an American 1,2 3 in the women's 110m hurdles. Why do I like American sprinters so much? Goes back to the 60s when Americans dominated the sprint events in Tokyo, Mexico and later in LA and Athens. It goes back to a love of Motown and Martin Luther King, Sidney Poitier, who by coincidence are all Afro-Americans.
Looking at the times of the 800m heats for the ladies there are some seriously fast times there with plenty going under 2 minutes. It all adds up to an eventual final where all go under 2 minutes. As a race it is likely to be a polar opposite to the women's 1500m.
Good 200m final for the ladies. Got the 3 medallists right but expected Dafne to get the gold and Tori Bowie the silver. All went under 23 seconds very easily which is world class running and that is what any finalist not expecting a medal would want.
Only because Mills and Clark had their last race postponed because of the lack of wind! They'll hopefully collect that gong today, as long as they don't sink.
