I personally don't think Fonte will leave. But if you said to me now that come 1 September, we'd have lost Fonte but replaced him with someone of Virgil or Toby's level (or, yes, Lovren's when he was with us), then I would absolutely be fine with that. But then again, Virgil's and Toby's don't just grow on trees.

They don't grow on trees, but we seem to keep finding the tree that they hide behind! :)

. And Ps. Pelle wasn't that good at hold up play anyway....

Lol you are just on a wind up now aren't you. When he wasn't performing dreadful back heels to nobody his general play for his team mates outside the box was very good from where I was watching.

If he is not playing due to a sulk while presumably team captain, that's rather disappointing and I will have lost respect for him.

Other than that, would I begrudge him a move? Well, he just signed a contract a year ago so apparently an extension and the amount left on his contract make little difference. Seems a foolish career move, but it's his career. If he thinks Man U is that important, good luck dude. 12m and we'll call it even.

Ok so 9 pages which start as Fonte is leaving, turns into an argument and moves on to talking about transfers generally. I am still none the wiser why people think Fonte is leaving. :emoticon-0138-think

I keep reading things like "8mil.. 12mil..." We'll call it even.

**** that. Williams went for 12/13, he finished way below us, hasn't won the euros recently. We've been mugged off for Mané IMO. We need to get top price for him, if he does go. We need to make him the most expensive 32year old. The club paid 90 for pogba, were willing to pay 60+ for 29y/o Ramos. Hold out for 18-20 at least, and I will say good bye and good luck.

Fans need to realise that when you "replace" a player, it doesn't always mean buying someone out of the same mould.

I agree to an extent, but Wanyama did a massively important job for us in the past few years and I don't think we have anyone bar Romeu who does that job (though he doesn't do it as well imo.)

Vic is an outright DM. Imo Pierre is not. So for me it's not a case of being of a different mould to Vic, but playing an almost completely different position/role.

I see it as Schneiderlin & Vic are 2 DM's of a different mould. Whereas Pierre isn't a DM at all judging on what I've read/seen so far*.

Again I'm not moaning about it, just making an observation as I see it. It could be that we're focusing on a more attacking game overall so we've 'replaced' him that way which is fine, but we could be in trouble if we lose our defensive solidity while still struggling for goals at the other end.

*I concede that it's still early days regarding this and he could end up playing DM for us, it's just not where I see him being most effective for us.

I'm not commenting on Fonte stuff for now as I'll wait till there's anything more concrete. I only realised halfway through my last post (to flt) that all my posts have probably on the wrong thread but was too far in by then <laugh>

Or we may actually give Reed a chance?

There'll be a few classy centre backs around after all the chopping and changing the top teams are doing. It may sound a bit sacrilegious, but I don't think Jose is the player he was, and he's not a match winner, just a good centre back. I like the guy for everything he's given Saints, but he's not God and will be replaced if need be. The replacement might not be at Jose's level immediately, but then again, neither was Jose

It's the leadership, organisation and positioning that will be very hard to replace.

Plenty of defenders out there with more pace, better ball skills and probably better in the air.

It's the other variables that will be hard to bring in and I don't think Virgil is quite ready to lead a defence

That's the other reason, yeah. And while I'm happy that it sounds like we're giving youth more of a chance this year. I'll still be massively concerned if we were to lose Romeu for a decent period of time.

No wind up. I have always valued what he gave us for two seasons, but from day one I have said that for a player of his size and stature, he didn't do it enough in general play and especially when we were under the cosh and played it up to him. He did it occasionally but not enough for that type of player, in my opinion. Yes he did some lovely chest offs, but he didn't hold it up and lay it off simply anywhere near enough. Don't think I am being rude if I don't reply on this again, it is just that people here are probably fed up of me saying this, as I may have mentioned it before a couple of times ....<whistle>

Williams is a decent player, though. Don't think I would hold it against him that he played for Wales rather than Portugal. They are both pretty solid, no-fuss, CB's. Both are/were captains of their respective PL clubs. Williams is 8 months younger, so might get a little more out of him.

I think they are pretty close, tbh.

I mainly think he might leave because Beefy says he might.

I think VVD would step up if he had to, so see him as a natural replacement for that aspect of Fonte's game. I never really worry about losing players though, so I probably am in a minority regarding how replaceable or otherwise Jose is.
