No, they would enquire of the asking price, possibly put in an opening bid, and the club would let them know how much it would take to sell the player. A club with half-decent management sets the release clause far enough above a player's worth to ward off clubs, without making the player feel like he's locked into that club for the length of his deal.

Check out any of the big moves, the release clauses are well known while bidding is ongoing. Higuain for instance, I believe Arsenal and others tried to bid less than the release clause but were told they would have to meet the full release clause.

Didn't realise this was linked to the original discussion haha, fair enough. Though it's a bit more of an interesting discussion than the one from yesterday, this one is actually speculative about how much information opposition clubs have.

As I posted on Twitter just before, not sure how we have the resources to offer Huddlestone, Elmo and now Diame new (and presumably in Diame's case improved) contracts but can't manage to sign any Free Agents.

Free agent's wages can be expensive.

Hopefully that's sarcastic. Huddlestone and Elmo were out of contract. They were essentially free agents that we signed.

I wouldn't blame any player for wanting out given the bloody mess we are in. Diabolical pre-season prep

So this must be a different offer to yesterday. I wonder whether Diame is getting a longer offer from Newcastle which makes them more attractive. That and the fact they have a manager and look like they are going to spend, or retain players, out of the Championship.

Bet Hudds is delighted he signed his extension now, citing Brucey being a key reason for doing so......we'll be hearing about his release clause next...........

Would we have tried to sign them if they hadn't played for us already? I very much doubt it. Would they have signed if Bruce had left?

That wasn't my point to begin with so no idea what you're on about.

We have the money to sign these players, we have the capacity to give them extra wages. The owners are clearly quite happy to commit wages for Diame in a new deal, so bizarre they won't bring in new players.
