We've just paid the going rate for PL-proven players (Mane, Winjaldum) and massively underpaid for PL-unproven players (Matip, Grujic, Karius).

You are right though we got 3 players there for less than on 18 year old english player would cost. Certainly wouldnt deny that.

Then we buy them because we aren't good enough (at the moment) to sign the category like Dembele. So we are stuck until we get success on the pitch or vastly improve our scouting and put utter faith in it.
We have got deals in the recent past after all. Can and Coutinho for eg. Our big coup in that time has been Firmino alone really, in that category above 'maybe'. The rest... all players who have proved themselves at a stepping stone club. Clyne, Lallana, Allen, Mane, Mignolet etc.
And if they succeed we have to accept that we too are another category of stepping stone currently.
