That's it, BB...that and Tom Graveney of course. No-one is really sure whether it shows hops were used in brewing earlier than was thought or whether they were being imported for some other unknown purpose.

Like cannabis, hops were (and presumably still are) a fairly versatile plant - the sap could be used to make brown dye, the leaves to make a yellow dye and the stems to make rope and paper. I often wonder if English brewers are still prohibited by law from making beer using traditional bitter additives, such as wormwood. Parliament passed a law in 1710 outlawing their use in order to make sure that brewers couldn't avoid the 1p a pound Hop Tax. It didn't stop Scottish brewers though, some of whom still brew fraoch beer today.

Whose last words to Buddy Holly were "I hope your ol' plane crashes"?

I know that Waylon Jennings was scared of flying, so chose to go by road and the Big Bopper took his place on the plane instead. Given that, I don't think it would be WJ - maybe one of The Crickets?

Yes, it was Waylon Jennings. I'm not aware that he was scared of flying though - in a recorded interview he said that Big Bopper asked him if he could have his seat on the plane as he was sick and didn't want to travel on the unheated bus. Before take off, Holly jokingly said to him "I hope your ass freezes on the bus", to which Jennings made his unfortunate response.

    Over to you

My mistake - it was Richie Valens who was scared of flying. The crash was discussed in an interview he did when I was young, which is why I got my facts mixed up.

A question in relation to a recent sporting event: what did Heather Knight forget?

She's the new England women's cricket captain so I'll take a guess at forgetting a coin for the toss.

In the 19th century Dudley, Donisthorpe and Furness had something in common. What was it?
