Now I've just been watching a bit of Gaelic Football and I suddenly thought Shane Long was playing. When the players run with the ball and do a foot tap, they look like Long's running style. I wonder if that is how he developed his running style, playing Gaelic football as a kid.

I notice that it isn't just the referees at St Mary's nor just English referees that can't see blatant penalties when Shane Long is involved.

There must be something in the rules that says you can kick him as high as you want in the penalty area because against Shane Long it is not a foul.

Just said exactly that to my wife. Are you hiding behind our sofa?

Pretty sure he's said before he used to play. Think you're right with the Tipp comment, too.

One law change of note:

... players who are injured by a challenge punishable by a yellow or red card can now have quick treatment on the field, rather than having to leave, which previously gave the offending team temporary numerical advantage.

The previous rule I found completely baffling that it was passed, in that the team which had the injured player were effectively penalised for it. Stupid, stupid rule done in the interests of entertainment rather than sport. So the amendment above is welcome. Unfortunately, they've had to confine the rule to yellow and red card fouls just in case the tackled player play-acts an injury to waste time. That's the modern game for you.

That was exactly the reason the rule was introduced in the first place, too much play-acting to waste time. If you remember originally a stretcher came on and the player had to go off on it. It was farcical but the idea was to shame the 'acting' player. Of course genuinely injured players should not be penalised.

One thing I hate is when a player is clearly able to walk but instead just sits down waiting for the ref to stop the game. Well, they shouldn't in my humble opinion (stop the game that is).
