For me, if you are not certain about leaving then you have to vote to remain. I worry that people will still be unsure and just stay at home which will effectively boost the Brexit vote percentage. As Johnny Cochran would put it: "If you are not sure who to blame, you must vote remain"
Indeed. A far scarier thought than Cameron. He might be a twat, but Boris is nothing short of dangerous.
The issue is that the likes of Gove and Johnson are leading the Brexit campaign purely for their own ends and not for the good of the country. All this dangerous nonsense such as there will be an extra £300m a month to spend on projects such as the NHS if we pulled out. This is a web of deceit being spun as it's the same crowd who want to dismantle the NHS for what it is (which is what Hunt's task is: to do a Dr Beeching job) and replace it with a For Profit model. So this £300m extra a month won't go to the NHS it will, without doubt, go into the pockets of their chums in industry and not used for the good of the common man. And that's only assuming that the £300m is an accurate figure. It won't be because they don't know and because we're in 'Purdah' the Remain campaign can't go to the Civil Service and as for figures to dispute this. It's basically a lie and one that they can get away with until the referendum. One can sum up the two sides' arguments as follows. Remain: the EU is crap for us but not as crap as it would be if we were to leave. Leave: It's all unicorns and rainbows. Trust us.
We have an agreement with france (really cant recall the agreement name, some clever cloggs on here will know) that sits outside of any EU law which means the french cant just tear down their border control at their end and let everyone through. Boats go back and forth anyway, Border control this end would need to ensure anyone coming over the channel were only allowed off the boat/eurostar if they have a british passport. Anyone else would need to remain on the transport and go back to france and sort out their plumbing so they dont have to sh!t in a hole in the ground.
We're talking about refugees and not immigrants here. Every country has a duty to take on refugees and this isn't dependent on whether we are in the EU or not. Immigrants from outside of the EU are controlled by each state so if you're not happy about the number of non-EU immigrants (not refugees) coming to the UK then what difference would it make if one is inside or outside the EU? I see it as a mark of a civilised country as one which opens one's borders to genuine refugees.
OK I realise you are for the most part a generation that has always had it good and never gone without, but even allowing for this some of the comments here disappoint me
I think it's hard for various governments to tell who are the genuine refugees or not. There have been thousands of Pakistani passports found dumped at various borders as non Syrians try to pass themselves off as Syrians... plus countless other natonalities. Also.. ISIS themselves have said their plan is to infiltrate the refugees to land suicide bombers at the door of the West. When you then look at the images of the Calais camps some ask a few basic questions: 1- If it is genuinely safety some of these folk seek... why travel across a dozen safe countries to get to the UK? 2- How come we rarely see or hear about women and children being amongst the refugees? It's questions like these and lazy media outlets which seem to paint a picture that everyone trying to get in is trying to kill us which is plain wrong. It's the freeloading economic migrants who want to come to the UK 'cos everything is free' who muddy the waters for the real sufferers. There was a lad came over from I think Somalia once... he started running as a young lad and did quite well. He speaks and is as British as you or I now and you will never guess his hard background. So when Mo Farah nails a gold at the Olympics I'll be proud as punch as he is a great Britain, one of my sporting heroes. I just hope that whatever the outcome of Brexit we have a clear system to quickly get to those who really do need our help and also sideline the freeloaders. It's broken right now and needs fixing whatever happens I feel.
Shouldn't even be a referendum. This is a nation that would still buy 2,000,000 copies of The Sun every day if it could, and we want them all to have a say on global politics? It's madness. I work with people who couldn't work out that Rey (Force Awakens) was a Skywalker. The BBC website started off trying to educate. Their information evolved over time to eventually have headlines like "so what is the EU?" and "what is a referendum?". If this isn't what politicians are here to do - make decisions in the best overall interests of the country - then what on fcking god's earth are they here for? That should be the fcking referendum - "should we move to proportional representation". Oh, yeah, we had that vote and fcked it up. Aren't they supposed to have all of the information internally to be able to make the call? It's well beyond frightening to hear the bickering, just makes me think we're floating blindly through space counting the minutes to oblivion. Oh, wait.....
Le Touquet treaty. The French have already said this could be revoked post brexit. I'll stress the word "could" as there is no guarantee however you just never know.
The question to ask....not whether we would leave, but if we were invited to join [a la the ECA 1972], would you vote for us to join the EU? A bit fat no from me. We can live without being a member state. We will still trade with the EU, we will still be economically strong. Socially, we would have control of our own borders [immigration works when controlled.] Can they live without us? I don't think so.
We elect MP's to work on our behalf, same with councils, the fact that they seem to have forgotten this principal of Parliamentary democracy is a disgrace, in the event of such a big question then the system is actually working properly by allowing all those that are eligible to vote to have say in the future of this country, that is the fundamental principal of a democracy something that this country has evolved and fought for over hundreds of years.
