Hey Mr. Owl, take your medicine and never mess with a vicious feline like me again - comprende amigo?!! We are Premiership
There's a famous peregrine falcon that lives in the city centre near me. It decided to spend some time in the tree at the back of my garden after its checks hatched, recently. Magnificent thing although it's just a blob in the photos I took. The owl that is always flying around the garden is lovely to behold, but it's screeching is a right racket. Incredible how silent they are in flight. I can usually hear it, rather than see it! I love birds, me.
in the early 90s there was an owl living in an oak tree top of stanley street spring bank scared the life out me missus it did!!
With the exception of adult female lesser spotted all three uk woodpecker species have red patches. The screeching and location would suggest a green woodpecker.
I've seen them once at Skipworth Common near Selby and it was a job to get close, as Old Tige says they have distinctive calls but you need some bins to get a decent view
See green ones regularly on my local golf course and occasionally in our garden. Saw a spotted variety on the golf course for the first time last week.
Saw It again this morning. From my settee, It was in line with my window, and It was hanging off the side of the tree. Really Indistinct little bird, and then You catch sight of the Red patches. Twice this week , now I've seen It.
I had another funny incident with a green and red bird about 6 or 7 years ago. On a warm sunny day I was sat in the lounge watching telly when what i believe was a baby parkeet hopped in through the open patio doors. It started to make its way further ino the room so i had to shepherd it out back through the doors. When i told my wife and friends absolutely no one would believe me. Everyone putting it down to the booze although i knew i was sober at the time. It was a couple of years later that I saw on the internet, articles about the London parakeets. They are probably about 40 miles from me so i think this one must have got lost and ended up in my garden.
I can see a load of Twitchers descending on the Porter St area. Make a change from the usual Twitchers that hang around that area
Three migrating male specimens of the two foot footed variety wobbling down Chants Ave this morning, Eastern European and intoxicated on the clear air ( or was it ale) of an early English morning in June. Unable to walk in straight lines these unfortunate specimens also to stop to relieve themselves against the wall of the chemist in full view of early morning shoppers and the MP Diana Johnson on the other side of the road campaigning for the 'Stay in Europe' campaign. Quite fitting really.
It will have been, they are gradually edging North too, there are records in Yorkshire. The only time I saw them was in Greenwich near the Observatory.
Yes, many records in Yorkshire. Brough being the nearest to Hull I have heard of. They are as far north as Hartlepool, Sunderland or even further now. Much doom and gloom predicted by the usual media suspects regarding invasions by hoards of alien species. The RSPB & government agencies monitoring and assessing any potential risk to native wildlife and have so far not suggested any need for widespread control. Just as well as it looks like with human aid in the form of distribution as pets and global climate change, they are making a bid for world wide occupation. From :- please log in to view this image to:- Although in their native SE Asia, they are reducing in numbers due to trapping for the pet trade. Nowt so dumb as humans.
Only one Peregrine left to fledge at Bath St Johns church ... Two have gone but one keeps returning. http://upp.hawkandowl.org/bath-peregrines/bath-st-johns-church-peregrine-live-web-cam-2016/
They are similar to the Collared Doves aren't they in some ways. I noticed in my area that the Wood Pigeons tend to dominate them so probably nature will find some way of usurping the parakeets, maybe they will make easy fodder for raptors
Still four left at Norwich .. http://upp.hawkandowl.org/norwich-peregrines/norwich-cathedral-peregrine-live-web-cam-2016/
