Sunderland will move for £3million defender Stephen Warnock if he returns from Aston Villa’s trip to Hong Kong still keen to leave.

Warnock is still angry that Villa executives backed former boss Gerard Houllier’s decision to make him train with the youth team last season.

Better than anyone we currently have to play left back.

He's class, would love to be true, but he is also back in the team and played against Blackburn, and may play today against Chelsea. So maybe he will be given a fresh start there, hope not really, as he is just what we want.

I can't see Mcleish letting him or anyone else go from him.first team squad now. His hands appear tied and it doesn't look like they'll get anyone else. From the outside looking in it looks like lerner only sanctioned the bent fee as he knew he make it back with the inevitable sales of young and downing. Villa are a club who have stagnated, we should be looking to barge past them now and show we really mean business.

Whenever I've seen him play for villa he has been poor.... He was woeful against us at home this yr (even elmo made him look daft). I'm hoping that their may be better options available.

I doubt this, but if true it would be brilliant,

I'm sorry mate but thats just rubbish.

Warnock is NOT better than Bardsley at all in that position. I really am at a loss as to why everyone is so keen to get Bardsley out of the team? Brown will IMO eventually be utilised at RB with Bramble and O Shea in the middle so if we bring in a LB, where does the player of the season fit in?

    Madness!!!

What we need, is a left sided attacking player and another striker. One who is capable of getting 15+ goals this season.

Do we think O'shea is a centre back? I've never really seen him play there so can't judge him at cb. Thought he'd be utilized between fullback positions and if we are stretched defensive midfielder.

Warnock is one of the best left backs in the league, without question.

He'd be a superb signing, and at £3million i'd imagine Quinny would be wearing a cape whilst negotiating.

He'd give us left sided balance, we could move Bardo to right back, and we'd be ready to go.

Sorry mate, I have to disagree. It's NOT rubbish Bardo needs to be at right back. I'd love him in both positions but apparently there's only one Phil Bardsley.

    Insanity!!!

Would much Rather have Brown in the middle alongside O'Shea personally.

What we need, is to stop hearing about a goal scorer. If it comes it comes...

Why O'Shea and Brown out of their natural positions? Wes Brown is a CB, he can play RB but that's not his natural position, the same goes for O'Shea he's a RB. You probably know that any way, but why do you think they should play there?

I cant see both Turner and Bramble dropped to accommodate O Shea and Brown. Bruce placed a lot of faith in his original 2 central pairings and wont want to just drop both so one will stay and one will give way. Neither TB or MT can play anywhere outside the central positions so that leaves one and I think O'shea will take it. We dont have a right back IMO and thats where Brown will fit in. Bardo deserves his place on merit so why should he be dropped?

I realise that most people would have Brown and O Shea as the central positions but then who plays RB? Bardo? Then who LB? Richardson? He is simply awful at LB. Awful.

Brown - Bramble - O'Shea - Bardsley would be my back 4 for the Liverpool game.

That's the point Cest... If Bardo plays right back then maybe Warnock would fit in at left back...

But O'Shea is a RB, which is why I would swap him and Brown

I don't rate him as highly as some on here, but I can't see a downside if we could get him for £3M...

None of my post makes sense, the quote has got tangled up with my response.

I can see both being dropped for the Liverpool game if they are not fit or up to speed. reports to date and comments from bruce suggest both are struggling to get both fitness and form. I think Warnock and/or Onuoha would be further improvement to the squad ... it may be one or the other and a 'value' judgement.

I would be happy with Brown and O'Shea at centre back, they both have experience and read the game so well. Against Liverpool that experience and know-how would be essential.

if hes available for 3m its a good deal. I dont rate him higher than Bardo right now but he is a good premier league player and a left back having him in the squad would be good for competition and would give Bruce lots of options at the back.
