Martina isn't good enough for where we want to be. He adapted superbly over the season and did a good job. He became a bit of a cult favourite and I think that was down to the very low expectations. When he played those early summer friendlies, he didn't look like a footballer. Koeman and the staff have done well to get him playing much better, however if we take off our romantic glasses (and despite him having had a decent run at the end of the season) he is not good enough for where we are going.

I stand to get battered now, but that's my view. I loved having him in the team and he had some good games, but in the cold light of day, we need a new RB unless one of the youngsters is ready.

That preseason Red Bull tournament was amazing <laugh>

Awful team performance, Cuco doing his best Ali Dia impression and Gary Preston on commentary....superb.

On Cuco I have a hard time agreeing. He'll never be a superstar but once he learned his role properly and stopped leaping up field like a startled gazelle when it wasn't called for he was a solid fullback. Probably wouldn't be first choice but it'd be worth keeping him on the books as backup IMO.

Echo giving its thoughts on the contracts of a few of our current players. Mostly well known stuff (Wanyama wants out, Pelle likely to leave) the only surprise was this:

That seems a little odd. He's improved massively over course of the season, was a regular in our starting eleven and I cant imagine he'd have any kind of massive wage demands.

As it stands he's our first choice RB. I don't think he'll ever be that again, but we ended up being grateful to have him last season, and could be again.

Then you do agree.

I think Cuco is beginning to look promising...apart from the goal (going down in folklore) he showed some real skill towards the end of the season. And to quote Koeman, players can take a year to settle in. And he seems a nice lad. I think he is worth another contract. The trouble with me is that I love too easily.

Unless we have someone lined up I imagine we will keep him for another year. Maybe Cedric will step up this season (having had his season to settle in) and one of the youngsters will come through.

That goal against Arsenal will live forever though.

I agree with that 100%. Love the bloke for all the daft sentimental reasons, and he's come on massively since he signed. But really, for an ambitious club, he's one to have in the squad, not a first choice RB.

Thought Cuco was our most improved player last season by a country mile and pleased for the lad as he seems a nice, genuine sort of fella. But would he manage to hold down the regular RB position in many other prem. league teams? Don't think so, he's good cover at best, which is why we bought him in the first place.

I think the amount of improvement he's shown, the solid performances at the end of the season and (presumably) low cost should earn him a new contract or at least an extension on his current one.

I'm not convinced. If we have the ambition we say, then there will be some that fall by the wayside. Sadly, as I like him, Martina for me is one to fall away if we can recruit better options. I am not a Martina basher, just trying to look at this after the season has ended and where we need to progress to.

My season ticket is in block 35, which is just about the RB channel when we are defending the Northam. I have seen him pretty closely and although I agree he has improved greatly, I still think we need better than him at RB. Just my opinion. Not right or wrong.

Me too Fran, but the season is over and I can look at this a little more coldly. I really want this club to keep moving on (should that be march on?) and that will ultimately mean some players may fall away. It is the same for me with Pelle as we discussed over the weekend; he has been very important and I can see him being important next season too (if he stays) but not beyond that.

The team needs to evolve forwards.

I like that and for me it's part of supporting a particular team, rather than just following football. There are some players that I adore more than others - there always are - and there are some players I care less about but I love them all because they play for Saints :emoticon-0111-blush

If there is enough room for such an enterprise in west quay on the site of the current Leisure world then that could be a realistic ambition

The way these things work, although the WaterMark Westquay is going up now, it's development along with the rest of that part of town was conceived 3-5 years ago; it's all totally dedicated to maximising tourist and cruise ship pounds as they sail into the new terminals, looking at the new Royal Pier and following the yellow brick road into town. It will all be developed, but I suspect it will not be us in there.

However, I think the Council aren't naive enough to know that with the rise of Admirals Quay nearby, waterside developments are an absolute premium and worth their weight in gold.

Although a long way off, I can see a total redevelopment of the area surrounding SMS as it is currently and the stadium itself being redesigned to house hotel/shopping/casino/megastore/saints museum kind of thing.

I agree. Martina would be a good player for a lower half PL team. I'm sure one of them could use competition at right back. We paid about £3m and it wouldn't take huge amounts more. If we are looking for improvement at right back (even if it's Jason McCarthy) we will need to make a space.

Van Der Wiel hasn't been signed yet, by the way.

As long as he doesn't sign with us I don't care where he goes. Hugely overrated player IMO.
