Just read rest of this thread after page 2 while watching a B movie called The Two Faces of January. Viggo Mortenson and Kirstin Dunst so should have been a lot better!
Over the last 12 months, I've been in court twice as a witness. One thing that really impressed me was both judges. We have a view of judges as removed from reality, doddering and delivering verdicts that cause an outcry for being either too lenient or too harsh.
During a trial, the judge writes his notes by hand and in long-hand. Proceedings are often slowed down so the judge can deliberately scribble away at his pad with a fountain pen. In both cases, I was tremendously impressed by the diligence of the judge, his ability to absorb information and process that information within the framework of the law.
So whether you agree with Chaz, Col or Watford, what's really important, and likely, is that the judge has very likely got this sentencing right on the basis of all the information he has been told to which we are not privy.
Interesting debate nevertheless.
