Seeing that agency letter about groups it reminded me that in the sixties I used to knock around with a girl called McLeod who's brother had an agency in Hessle. Just googled it and it is still going.
The agency is (McLeod Holden) but Pete Mcleod retired some time ago. Pete was a founder member of Roger Blooms Hammer + managed them after he left till they split up in the early 70's. RBH were quite popular in the North. They were the support act for Pink Floyd at a gig in Leeds one time (you can buy online a replica poster for the gig).

I had forgotten that, that he was in Roger Blooms Hammers. Pete was a few years older than me so I guess he would be retired by now.

In the 60's + 70's went to virtually every gig in Hull whether it be ABC Regal, Skyline (top of co-op), Burton Constable, Cottingham Civic Hall, Withernsea, Hornsea, Hull University + The Spa Bridlington. Saw the likes of Pink Floyd (on more than one occasion), Geno Washington +The Ram Jam Band (best live band I ever seen), Sam + Dave, Traffic, Spencer Davis, etc., at Skyline. At ABC Regal - The Beatles, The Hollies, The Spotniks (Swedish), Peter Jay + The Jaywalkers (Peter Jay owns, or used own Tower Ballroom at Blackpool), Helen Shapiro, Craig Douglas, Emerson, Lake + Palmer (plus Keith Emersons previous band The Nice) plus many more. City Hall - Rory Gallacher, Status Quo. Burton Constable - The Rats, The Kinks, The Pretty Things, Third Ear Band, Chicken Shack, Fairport Convention, The Move, Geno (again), Savoys Brown Blues Band,Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera . Always remember being disappointed when Thunderclap Newman did not turn up to one. The list seems endless.
Went to uni in Manchester purely for two things bands + football (could go to match somewhere most nights). Remember wandereing into the College of Tech's hall + watching Chicken Shack practising. Another time one evening down Oxford Road I spotted Barclay James Harvest giving a free concert on the grass next to railway viaduct. Saw that many bands - Fleetwod Mac (our Xmas do - stood right in front of the stage as everybody seemed to be dancing), Hawkwind, Pink Floyd (there when they recorded the live part of the Ummagumma album), Led Zeppelin (Free Trades Hall - Sunday night + the Hall management had to turn the power off because they would not get off the stage). The list again seems endless.
In the same vein does anybody remember the local band Roger Blooms Hammer. I chap I worked with played organ in the band.
My mother would have been at a lot of those, she liked Helen Shapiro too as I remember seeing a record lying around when I was a kid. She tells some stories about Elton John too but I think she ran into him in London or West Yorkshire, she probably wasn't around here to see him play

I was pretty lucky then growing up because I lived almost directly opposite Fairview Studios in Great Gutter Lane, Willerby so I got to see the groups coming + going to record. It was only a detached house with a pair of bay windows to the front. Keith Herd constructed the recording studios on the ground floor in the two downstairs front rooms. Mind you at that time I did not know most of the artistes arriving except the local bands such as The Rats. Every summer my mother + stepfather would move down to the South of France for extended holidays at a static caravan we had. Which meant in National Lampoon Animal House parlance 'party time'. I used to have all weekend parties. At one Mick Ronson turned up with an acoustic guitar. Wow! The way he played that guitar. Another night Ray Harvey turned up uninvited. Of course I did not dear say you cannot come in! When you got to know him we was an ok bloke. It was strange in later years bumping into him pushing a pram, or should I say in Hull lingo a 'tansad'.

I remember the studio well, I used to hang around Willerby Square at the time. Also used to go to Duke in Ferriby Sunday evenings to see the Rats as well as other local bands.

My first gig was Chuck Berry at the ABC in 65.

Mine was David Whitfield at Hull New Theater around 62/63. Not really my choice but I got free tickets as my mam worked there. I hear they have a statue of him outside the theater now.

Probably the biggest star Hull has produced.

He was the first British male vocalist to earn a gold disc and the third overall. He was the first to reach the Top Ten of the Billboard Top 100, and the first artist from Britain to sell over a million copies of a record in the US. (wiki)

Two years before Gerry and the Pacemakers.:-

Should have been a city anthem.
