To think Bowie, New York Dolls and Genesis P Orridge were all knocking around in pre-punk Hull in the early 70's!

Other Hull City Hall gigs, The Damned, Siouxsie and the Banshees with The Cure, New Order, Tim 'do bears **** in the woods' Wilby, The Strokes. Fine Young Cannibals.

Thanks to this thread and recent Bowie in Hull anecdotes I have improved my image of early 70’s Hull then the recollection I had of the grey and rainy view from Hammonds pic-a-dish as a bored pre-pubescent kid.

I now see Bowie & Ronson drinking pints in Hull Cheese with the weekend millionaires whilst the New York Dolls were walking past eating patties on their way to Malcolms, I see Philip Larkin riding around on his bike and Tom Courtney and Waggy pissed in Bier Keller with Omar Sharif and Julie Christie. I see hordes of City skins spilling out of Monte Carlo Café with gold sprayed docs boarding the train to Stockport and no eggchasing **** going to Boulevard whilst Arthur Bunting was still at Rovers unless it was for speedway. I hear The Who playing City Hall louder and prouder than Live at Leeds, T Rex at Brickhouse and Throbbing Gristle practising in the old town before the Sex Pistols first came north to Manchester. Cheers early 70’s city of culture, never was dull in Hull was it.

His place in Prince Street was a whole house (semi-derelict, if I recall it rightly). Before that he lived in a building in Wellington Street, with me and a bunch of mates.

    He was an outstanding turd.

As for haworth arms that place was full of hippys and hells angels on a friday night and one 13/14 year old skinhead sat with Ray Harvey and Floyd...

    And many in between. :)

Floyd... how could I forget? I hardly dare ask but what became of him? He seemed ancient (to a young me) even then.

I wonder if you recall another of similar ilk who was prominent in such circles? Most distinguishing feature being a necklace of human teeth acquired, he said, from a dental assistant girlfriend. Can't remember his looks or name though he was often around.

He got his arm broken at Windsor festival when police tried to encourage us to leave by driving their vans through our tents.

Wasn't aware of the G P Orridge connection to Hull. Thanks.

And it can't be denied... we all have a bit of the turd in us. ;)

In the 60's + 70's went to virtually every gig in Hull whether it be ABC Regal, Skyline (top of co-op), Burton Constable, Cottingham Civic Hall, Withernsea, Hornsea, Hull University + The Spa Bridlington. Saw the likes of Pink Floyd (on more than one occasion), Geno Washington +The Ram Jam Band (best live band I ever seen), Sam + Dave, Traffic, Spencer Davis, etc., at Skyline. At ABC Regal - The Beatles, The Hollies, The Spotniks (Swedish), Peter Jay + The Jaywalkers (Peter Jay owns, or used own Tower Ballroom at Blackpool), Helen Shapiro, Craig Douglas, Emerson, Lake + Palmer (plus Keith Emersons previous band The Nice) plus many more. City Hall - Rory Gallacher, Status Quo. Burton Constable - The Rats, The Kinks, The Pretty Things, Third Ear Band, Chicken Shack, Fairport Convention, The Move, Geno (again), Savoys Brown Blues Band,Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera . Always remember being disappointed when Thunderclap Newman did not turn up to one. The list seems endless.
Went to uni in Manchester purely for two things bands + football (could go to match somewhere most nights). Remember wandereing into the College of Tech's hall + watching Chicken Shack practising. Another time one evening down Oxford Road I spotted Barclay James Harvest giving a free concert on the grass next to railway viaduct. Saw that many bands - Fleetwod Mac (our Xmas do - stood right in front of the stage as everybody seemed to be dancing), Hawkwind, Pink Floyd (there when they recorded the live part of the Ummagumma album), Led Zeppelin (Free Trades Hall - Sunday night + the Hall management had to turn the power off because they would not get off the stage). The list again seems endless.
In the same vein does anybody remember the local band Roger Blooms Hammer. I chap I worked with played organ in the band.

And they say "if you can remember it, you weren't there" ;)

It's true though, if you liked live music you could get to see just about every band on the circuit, from massive to obscure in just a couple of years and with very little expense. If nothing local caught your eye, there was always Leeds, Bradford, or even Manchester or London. Hitch hiking could be as reliable as the trains if you were well practiced and you could still get on trains without a ticket and not risk being hung drawn and quartered.

    Then there were the festivals.:-

    Yes, interesting.

I wonder how closely those amounts and there coming massive rise would correspond to those of top flight footballers over the next couple of decades.

    Pretty similar I would think.

Am I imagining this or do I remember decent bands playing at Beverley Road baths in the late 60's?

Seeing that agency letter about groups it reminded me that in the sixties I used to knock around with a girl called McLeod who's brother had an agency in Hessle. Just googled it and it is still going.

    Raine Club

    STATEMENT regarding Raine Club

It is with regret that the Raine Club will be closing. This is due mainly to that fact Hull City council have monitored noise levels at the shows and deem the venue not suitable for these types of acts. Sound proofing to the whole building would need to be carried out in order to facilitate these acts, and the cost involved rules this option out. The upcoming events have been cancelled but the events booked in for later on in the year have been kindly picked up by a friend of mine who runs another venue. So stay tuned for an announcement on that. All that's left is to thanks all who supported the venture, bands, customers and colleagues, the fantastic staff who sweated blood for us at club. Supporting venue owners such as Darren and Sam down at orileys some fantastic promoters whom we consider friends now. Ill not miss some of the snidey two faced back stabbers but thats for another time. Many thanks
    Its been a blast

I don't remember any rock gigs but they did have ballroom dancing and Jazz concerts. Confirmed here with info on other Hull Venues :-

    Beverley Road Baths

As well as having rock groups in the 1960s (and 70s?) the Beverley Road Baths had also been a popular ballroom dancing venue in the 1950s and 1960s. Regular bands were those of Harry Chatterton, Stan Thrussel and Leslie Rose.

    http://www.paul-gibson.com/social-history/discos-nightclubs.php

(I believe the author of that blog is/was a member here?)

    edit...

Confirmation from that link of of my recollection of the strange "waitress" system at Malcolm's mentioned earlier. :-

    Malcolm’s Discoteque, George Street.

They had a sort of barrier in front of the bar behind which girls stood and you had to give them your order they would then get it from the bar staff and you then paid them, the system was dropped after a few months thank goodness, the beer was Camerons if I remember rightly'.
