Always was - the ref just got it wrong. The ball was deemed to have been kicked twice by the first player 'cos he used 2 feet to get the ball in the air - against the rules with a any free kick.
I was referring to those comments before the clip was posted but thanks again for your always intelligent and insightful comment.
Does anyone remember the 'sneaky corner' routine we used quite a few times under Hateley? Essentially it involved a player walking over to the corner, rolling the ball very slightly into play with his foot - maybe the circumference - and then walking away shouting instructions and pointing before another player walked over as if to take the corner 'properly' before dribbling in towards goal. The problem was it was so sneaky most refs blew up and made us retake it despite the fact it was entirely legal so we stopped doing it. I always thought our players should tip-off the ref beforehand and then he wouldve been fine with it. It was actually a really good move and nowadays I'm sure refs would be wiser and let it go.
Despite the very first post on the thread questioning whether they knew it was legal or not you mean?
The balls been moved off the spot on that clip at a slow pace & Suarez isn't the slowest is he? If you've got a pic of him stood in the D before the kicks taken? Then it's good for me.
If a player scores a penalty when a player of his own side has encroached but the goalkeeper was three yards off his line when the ball was kicked: is it a goal, retake or what?
If I was a ref and I saw some encroaching on the box during a pen I would make them take it again until it didn't break the rules. I'd also give a penalty straight away for any shirt-pulling in the box.
