One thing I would say reading through these comments and watching the match is a lot of people are unfairly hammering Benteke.

As I've said it other posts we did not utilise him effectively which meant he barely got a sniff.

That second half we did absolute nothing but defend until we scored pretty much out of the blue.

Only other chance was when we actually played the ball in with quality and his header was saved.

Benteke did nothing wrong in that game, he brought the ball down well when the ball wasn't hoofed out of play by the likes of Enrique.

Obviously him fitting into the team long term other than super sub is difficult to see - but the guy did not deserve the hammering he has from some tonight on here.

Its easy to scapegoat.

I hear what you're saying but this guy was our senior player, against 4 tier opposition. It's not simply good enough.

Actually despite defense being considered American and defence English, the defense spelling was in use in England prior to the formation of the US and both are now commonly used interchangeably in English speaking countries

The US speaks English like we speak Latin.

I agree mate. It was essentially our u21. I'm actually proud of that performance because a) they're young, b) it was a difficult pitch to play and c) they've hardly played together.

All to easy for an upset tonight, vodoo dolls were definitely bought on our licence money tonight by those 'experts' at the BBC. **** me, Murphy was in tears for Lallana. Definitely something going on with those two

Another thing.

We totally did not help ourselves with Benteke.

The guy who is strong, good in the air, and thus thrives off of decent, quick delivery.

What did we do? Fart about with too many 1-2's and not getting the ball in quickly and accurately.

Again highlights the problem we have of him fitting in our philosophy.

You cannot blame the fact our midfield could not even get the ball anywhere near him.

Thought Stewart was neat and tidy. Nothing spectacular but didn't do anything wrong. Same with Randall, was decent enogh defensively and occasionally got forward and looked dangerous
Not sure what his best position is though CM/CB/RB?

I've not been impressed with Randall at all - he's played 3 games now, and he lacks the basics of defending.

If we go on the assumption they can be used interchangeably then I did use it correctly

It's also interesting that defence is considered the spelling when defensive, defensively or defensiveness all use the s instead of the c, which I assume is because of the use of both versions of the word up until the printing and distribution of standardised dictionaries?

The use of defense instead of defence however has continued consistently and increased rapidly in the age of computers due to auto corrects on so many things not recognising it as a mis-spelling due to being American or accepting both versions of the word.

Given its widespread use throughout English speaking countries I'd consider it an acceptable spelling

Nah, how about we criticise him when he plays poorly and praise when he plays well? I.e he plays poorly every week so we shall criticise him every week.

Like defending shockingly poor performances from coutinho, firmino etc based on its Benteke's fault.....
