Every transfer window people on here bang on about strikers. The strikers aren't the problem; in fact, I'd say buying a striker in January would be a waste of money. Hernandez is our best player with Dawson injured. Diomande has yet to play a decent run of games. It's the midfield that's the fundamental problem and has been for years. Livermore, Huddlestone and Diame are all great players but sometimes they don't play to a standard we expect of them. Meyler has a few good games but he's an average Championship player overall. We don't really have an experienced defensive midfielder or box-to-box midfielder. Wingers are fine, I think. It's been said more times than enough but we're crying out for a player like Ashbee, perhaps with a bit more technical ability, to be our midfield general. We haven't had a player like that since he left. If we had a player like that, the other midfielders would have a bit more freedom to be creative in the middle and play more through balls.
I was hoping we got Butterfield because he's a great box-to-box player. A defensive midfielder the media linked us to was Emmanuel Badu from Udinese but he was probably too expensive and we could only sign a player like that if we sold Huddlestone for £5M plus.
