If you don't think there is a food chain in football then you are either naive or delusional. I'm not stating that being 'big club' is the only factor to consider. Reputation, current squad, league position, league each team is on, staff, infrastructure, stadium, city size, potential, league standings in recent years, ability to attract players, manager reputation. As it currently stands we are in a better position than Southend for all of those attributes. If things suddenly change and 5 years down the line we switch positions with Southend then we have dropped down the food chain and they have shot up it then I'd change my stance accordingly. Bournemouth are in a better position than us now and if they come in for Huddlestone for example, then who are we to stand in his way of going.
It's hard to keep hold of a player if a bigger club comes in for them, but that's no reason for them not to try and it certainly doesn't make them 'bitter and spiteful'.
You would have had a club to follow sooner or later whatever, any abyss would not have been permanent.
It's quite telling that there doesn't seem to be much interest in Huddlestone, he had plenty of hype not that long ago (not that I ever bought into it).
He's going to have to prove himself again, clubs will look at last season's performances and think "Not convinced"

The other good point about signing Odubajo is that he would become our most expensive signing outside the PL, taking the title from Prozzie.
